For the past two months New York City has been blanketed in advertisements for the new Adam Sandler movie Click. Usually it's pretty easy to ignore ads for new movies but this movie struck me as far too shameless to avoid close scrutiny.

While I haven't seen the movie yet (it's funny to imply that I will see the movie) I can't help but notice something. After getting past the fact that the movie seems to largely be a 90 minute advertisement for Bed, Bath & Beyond I couldn't help but notice two things.

Firstly, I can't even believe that this movie hasn't already been made. Maybe it's the fact that everyone has at some point imagined this scenario in their mind. That may be what makes it unbelievable. It's a movie plot and concept that has already been thought of by every living human being who knows what a remote control is. Perhaps that's what makes this film so brilliant. The makers of this film were brave enough to actually make a movie that nearly every other living being on the planet has considered and imagined in their own mind. While others left this concept untouched, these brave filmmakers actually wrote and filmed it in its entirety. They weren't even scared away by the fact that this concept is, at best, only good for a five-minute segment or skit on a sub par variety show. One would imagine that the next mind-blowing concept they will put to film is a film about a guy whose car can transform into an airplane to avoid traffic.

Secondly, and this is actually the first thing I noticed, it's hard to ignore the fact that this movie is actually just Bruce Almighty all over again. Just replace Morgan Freeman with a remote control (or Christopher Walken, depending on how you look at it).

The shamelessness of a Bruce Almighty remake a mere three years after its release is remarkable on its own merit. What really shocked my socks off is that Click was actually written by the same two men that wrote Bruce Almighty. That takes shamelessness to a previously unknown realm. To recreate someone else's lame idea into your own is an American film and television tradition that is nearly a century old. To rehash your own ideas is nearly as old but to do so with this level of shamelessness and relish is only as old as the movie Click.

What's even more amazing is that the same two writers are hard at work preparing a sequel to Bruce Almighty called Evan Almighty. In this movie Morgan Freeman decides to give his powers to Steve Carrell instead of Jim Carrey. However, this could diverge from the Bruce Almighty and Click formula since it appears that this new movie is about God (Freeman) bestowing his powers on a simple fool (Carrell) to build an Ark, rather than just part traffic so he can get to work on time.

Maybe sticking to the formula may not be such a bad idea after all.

If Bomfunk MC's musicvideo for Freestyler counts, then somebody has. Three minutes long, same concept and even a story twist at the end, all accompanied by a fairly decent soundtrack.

I don't know what's more believable, a remote control that can pause, rewind and fast forward time, or Adam Sandler being married to Kate Beckinsale! Zing!

I mean, come on, Kate! Your Much Ado co-star Robert Sean Leonard is on House with Hugh Laurie. Couldn't you do something palatable like that?

All they had to do to write this script was use the "find and replace a word" feature in MS Word. Come on, that had to take a few minutes.

It would have even been better if they just used the same names and only changed the title of the movie.

It really is amazing that she is in these movies. However, it's still technically a step up from those vampire movies... or at least a step to another pedestal at the same level.

cold comfort farm was the first thing i ever saw Kate Beckinsale in and i fell in love...

she hardly seemed like the same person in all the big dumb holywood movies she's been in.

haveing said that though this the exact look i would have on my face if i were suddenly married to her...

"Click" focuses on a workaholic architect who finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.

Erm... isn't that basically just a dumber version of "The Butterfly Effect"?
