Dear Yahtzee,

This topic might already have been covered ages ago, but I am a new member and I cannot possibly be arsed to read every thread on this forum. My question is: have you ever thought about having your games translated yet? The reason I am asking this because I, like all the other people on this forum, am convinced that your games are BRILLIANT, and this seed should be spread everywhere. smile.gif

Anyway, putting sucking-up aside, I honestly believe that there are many non-English members on the forum, who would be honoured if they had the privilege to have such a task bestowed upon. I am a native Hungarian who majors in English (and Japanese) at university, my future plans are to become an interpreter, and I also used to translate computer games for a living into Hungarian. I'd really like to translate your more serious games (5-7DAS, 1213) into Hungarian, but what I'm trying to put across is that I'm convinced that there are people who could (and would) probably translate them to wider-spoken languages on professional level.

Since I'm no user of the AGS engine, I'm not sure if this can be done without it, maybe by translating some kind of script file, I truly do not know. This is more your area of expertise.

I sincerely hope you are interested.

I could translate those games into German... but those jerks over here probably still wouldn't get it. dry.gif That, and I'm too afraid to find an explanation for the 'grolly'.

The problem I keep finding when I try to get people to do translations is that AGS doesn't support special characters, just the basic alphabet and a handful of punctuation marks. A lot of foreign languages rely quite heavily on them.
As I walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I realised that it could do with a lick of paint.

Damn, I was afraid of that. However, now I'll have to check AGS out myself, to see if there's any way to get around this. Maybe if we apply enough of pressure on the developers, they just might release a patch that would make AGS support accented characters.

I really feel that this would help a lot, because in Hungary, the majority of the population does not speak English, and games rarely ever get translated into our language, so having a Hungarian translation of games has always been a good incentive for us to be more interested in them. Maybe this is true for my country only, but maybe not...

And more interest ----> more donations? wink.gif

Hmmm, it says "Accented characters (...) cannot be used by default. You need to import a TTF font to do so." Uhhh, does that mean something could be done about it then?

Well, after importing a TTF font into the template game, it worked! Long accented Hungarian vowels like ű and ő aren't pretty, but that can be substituted with ü and ö. This is only a minor aesthetic bummer, so I see no more obstacles to this now! And it's obvious the developers thought of people making translations to their games, because there's a Make Translation Source option in the game menu. So hypothetically, all you'd have to do is to send the translation source, I send back the translated version and the TTF file, and you upload the new font into the game.

By the way, Hungarian fonts can also be used for German, French or any other accent-using languages as well.

Well, at least I was able to coax one person into checking it out...

...

Others??? tongue.gif

If Yahtzee had the good heart to bestow such gifts upon us, the least we could do is to try and return the favour by making his games popular on a wider scale, don't you think?

Yahtzee, if you're still reading this topic, the problem with the foreign characters has been (more or less) solved, so there are no more obstacles in the wake of getting the games translated. So are you interested in this at all? Since you mentioned you'd tried having them translated before, it makes me think so, that's why I'm still forcing this thread. Of course, if you're not interested anymore, then I guess I'm just flogging a dead horse here.

The problem with the long accented characters could also be solved simply by finding a better TTF font.

I originally imported a Hungarian font, which is supposed to look OK with long vowels, but gets screwed up in the game.

If I wanted to change the font I'd have to compile and upload an entirely separate version of the game. If you're okay with that, email me the ttf file and I'll see if I can get it working. If it does work out I'll send you the translation file.

Of course I'm okay with that, it's not me who has to do the extra work, is it? happy.gif

If you want, I could try to do it into German or French. Give the game a proper international audience.

I say go for it!

EDIT: The Hungarian translation process is well under way, and according to my experiments with the compatibility of AGS and accented characters, there shouldn't be much of a problem with other languages either. My advice is to contact Yahtzee, and tell him about your intentions and your credentials.

PORTUGUESE! I want those games in portuguese!

To David : So, it worked?

To Yahtzee: I played 5DAS, 7DAS and Trilby's notes to the end. There are many brazilian gamemaniacs who would love to play those jewels but dont understand a single word in english. Just give the a txt file with all words and I translate them. Many portuguese words have accented characters, but I think this problem is solved by now, right?
Just one question: May I change the game characters names? Its not necessary but would be cool...
