I wasn't 'searching desperately for nitpicks'; it just randomly occurred to me. I'm not trying to claim that it's a major plot-hole or anything.

I know. I do the same stuff with the Simpsons all the time. i.e. try to find plot holes, consistency errors, etc.

NBD, relax, Im not trying to attack!

BTW they are farming that wierd Purple crap that they drink with dinner. They need the moisture to make it liquidy.

Hmm, a burning question indeed... I suspect that the whole thing was just something Owen made up because he wanted to cover up that he'd been growing pot.

My thought was, considering the requirements, and that all of the housing is underground, maybe they are farming the magic mushrooms GL was apparently using when he came up with the PT?

Now I know what the gushers mean by searching desparately for nitpicks. Nonetheless, its always fun to do stuff like this....

If you are referring to the PT, there is no need to search desperately for nitpicks. They just kind of rush at you, almost like an avalanche. It is trying NOT to find nitpicks, THAT is the desperate part!

Helena poses an interesting question, and I did not take her post to mean she was nitpicking. It's one of those background things that DOES make you wonder. Another $.02 from me is that maybe there are times of the year when there is more moisture - such as a point in the planet's orbit where it is further out from the suns, and the moisture is easier to collect because it is not being evaporated as quickly.

nd I don't see how you can grow or harvest moisture.

Right, I always took it as similar to calling a lowly farmer a "dirt farmer." I mean, he's not farming dirt, after all, he's just trying to eke out a crop from what they've got.

Man, this is makes want to read the novelisation. wink.gif

Star Wars Databank People!!!

"Dotting the property were a number of moisture vaporators, devices designed to pull water vapor from the parched air. The resulting water was either stored in reservoirs for later resale, or directed underground to irrigate sheltered crops."

Lars was apparently a water baron.

Sellout. Man of the soil and of the water. On a planet made of Sand, where Luke isn't the only who hopes never to return.

@Gobbler
It's nice to see that someone appreciates the lots of smoking wee...I mean hart thinking I did to come up with that answer. wink.gif

@georgelucas4greedo
Well, that still doesn't answer the burning question what kind of plant they would water, does it?

@myladyblue
Yes, I agree with you that the Flanelled One had a lot of magic mushrooms before writing or directing any given PT movie. (Is 'magic' what it is called nowdays? smile.gif ) Exchange 'mushroom' with pot and/or spice, and I think we're on the same page.

Think about it really hard and you'd find it very consitent. I mean, Han owes Jabba money for a load. Jabba is a big mobster, that would imply he would smuggle illegal stuff ("spice") from the planet. So the spice is harvested on Tatooine.
So Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru must be the foundation of an illegal muliti-million Datarie (sp?) bussiness...no surprise Owen didn't want Luke to go!

Just something I was thinking about earlier: what, exactly, are Owen and Beru Lars 'farming'? I know they're described as 'moisture farmers', but if they're just extracting moisture from the ground or atmosphere (which I'd hardly describe as 'farming'), why do they have a 'harvest'? You'd think it'd be the same all the year round.

Just wondering...

They cry alot so they farm the tears from thier eyes.
