And yes, people do tend to not speak at 100mph down here like up north, but you have your four basic accents: Your hick/redneck, which is uneducated, ugly, and downright irritating. Then you have your "southern belle" accent, which is, well, think Stella from Streetcar Named Desire. Then you have the people like me, who, while I don't speak fast, for the most part I say words like the dictionary says to, and people don't tend to suspect I'm even from the south. Last, you have the most common accent, which is somewhere between the "southern belle" accent and the people like me. Actually, that accent is only the most common among people my age and younger. The southern accent seems to be dying out, except for among rednecks - they definitely pass their accent along to their offspring. Yuck.
Edit: The point of all that was to say that we're not all horrible speakers or hard to understand. People give us such a hard time. I think someone from neither place would have a better time understanding your average person from the South than your average Noo Yawker or someone from Nyu Joysey.
