"There is a group of fans for the films that doesn't like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like Terminator, and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike," said Lucas. "The movies are for children but they don't want to admit that....In the second film they didn't like Yoda."

I loved Yoda, who the f**k didnt like Yoda in ESB. He was one the most noble, wisesyt characters in the OT.
It seems like everyone is over the nitpicking. Too bad.

... and he showed Luke that he was being a dumbass in a rather humorous manner. I know I loved him right away.

Err... that is, platonic love, of course...

I think Lucas just makes this stuff up to make bashers look bad. "Well of course they didnt like Jar Jar, these people didnt even like yoda!" :sarcastic Luc-ass voice:

This man truly pisses me off... devil.gif

This is terrible. Badly done, George! Yoda (OT) may have been a borderline comical character, but he still had more depth than many of the characters in the OT, not to mention the PT. Jarjar was just ridiculous. There is a difference between having an interesting character that comes across charmingly amusing, and having a character that is just obnoxiously stupid. Yoda was often very witty in his own way, but Jarjar wouldn't know wit if it slapped him across the face with a dead fish. (I just like imagining someone slapping him across the face with a dead fish smile.gif )

"The problem is, you're not a kangaroo... that's a bear... and he's in your pants."
"Maybe artists shouldn't talk about their art."
"Well kids, I guess your father isn't a hermaphrodite."
"Izzy! enough with the rabid smootching!!"

Yoda in ESB was made to look as real as any of the human characters in the film, and became an iconic figure for the rest of the 1980s and beyond, whereas the PT Yoda (even the puppet one in TPM) was a parody of a beloved character as the whole PT was a sad parody and slander of the OT. I never heard of anyone who hated Yoda of the OT, just the opposite, which serves as further proof that Lucas didn't watch his own OT before embarking on the PT. If he did, Yoda would have had the same gravitas we see in ESB instead of being a laughing stock.

They also hated Howard the Duck, George, and with good reason......

It just doesnt add up George. Yoda in PT looks like his own bastard child. And why the hell has he worn the same clothes for 30 years!

I can remember some early criticism of Yoda, and I wonder if that stuck with Lucas. If he had kept in contact with the fan base, he would've learned that Yoda grew on us. The people that I remember not liking Yoda---do like him today, or grew to like him over time.

Of course, this is not working with the PT. It's not growing on me.

One of my gusher friends was critical of Yoda. I can remember it clearly, but then the character grew on him. Now he's defends Jar Jar. Go figure.

Those are his Jedi robes, his uniform, what he wears, Obi Wan goes into exile and does the same thing. Yoda's in ESB are more tattered than the ones he has toward the end of ROTS. A better question may have been does George Lucas continually wearing jeans and flannel shirts even though he's a multi-billionaire had an effect in a consious or subconsious way so the SW characters from the OT that appear in the PT have pretty much the same outfits.

Hey my first post. Yoda seems to be a little stir crazy considering he's been on dagobah for many years with as far as we know little outside contact. He kinda goes nuts when luke crash lands there. Being as it was the first time anyone saw yoda on screen their first impresssion was like I'm guessing "ok, what's this?" but we soon see that yoda isn't a silly old nut when he get's into his mentor role. They say in sociology that the first contact situation is the most important for how people will view you over time. Perhaps because the first view of yoda in esb was kind of silly people associate yoda with that first scene of someone digging though rations. biggrin.gif

The scene with Yoda in ESB and the scene with Sir Didymus in Labrynth are suspiciously similar.....
