Lucas releases the O-OT A twisted joke?

Lucasfilm is not doing anything to the laserdisc release. They are simply putting it on dvd. So there will be no cleanup or new compression from original source material whatsoever as far as I understand. Simply put, a non-anamorphic first generation dvd would look better than what we're getting. So I'm not that certain about the negligable difference part. But obviously it depends on what you are used to.
But this just f**king sucks! He does have the technology, he just enjoys taking a piss on OT fans every now and then...

I really have to believe that he gets off on ticking us, the people that have made him the multi-millionaire that he is today, off. And while I agree that it would be nice to have something that looks really nice and "clean," I do really enjoy the idea of having the OT as they were: imperfections and all. The wrong color lightsaber on Darth Vader in A New Hope, the matte lines, the "see-thru" Snowspeeder cockpits, and the Emporer's slug. I really love all that stuff and it takes me back to the good 'ol days of visual fx. When you could basically reach out and touch it. That's part of why I love the Indiana Jones stuff. It's untouched and makes me feel like a kid again when I see the little stop-motin animation mine car chase from Temple of Doom. But I understand the frustrations in not having a cleaner version.
Ah, the double-edged blade that is this version of the OOT that Thee Flanneled One is shoving down our collective throats.

Yep, and what really sucks about this is we fans can't win.
If we buy it he'll be like "Ha, stupid fans will buy anything, no matter how crappy!"
If we don't buy it he'll be like "See, I told you my new editions were better. The spoiled fans whine for the originals but don't really want them after all!"
But, at least, there are now going to be official copies of the Original OT on DVD floating about, finally. Why he couldn't have done this back in 1997 is beyond me... if all he's doing is dumping the Laserdisc copies onto the newer format.

yes i'll buy these shitty copries, because they're still superior to the SEs... in all their digital tweak glory... which i'll have too... for some reason...
what? he can't push enough copies of his precious SEs on to people?

He has most of the original footage cleaned up anyway so all Industrial Light and Magic would have to do is just clean up several minutes here and there and splice it into what they've got already. It would be nowhere near as difficult as the Lucasfilm spokespeople are making it out to be. And the expense wouldn't be a problem either, considering the enormous profit they are going to make.
I think I'm going to get these DVDs as well. But it would have been nice if the films that were the most popular movies in the world for over twenty years were given a little more respect.
I might see about making my own DVD cover sleeves though.

As for this debate, I will buy a used set just as soon as one ends up in a pawn shop. I normally don't like to support those places, since they're just legal fences for stolen goods, but I don't want to give Lucas any money either. So it's a rock and a hard place. And I figure what the hell; anyone who buys the box after all the bitching they've done abiut Lucas, well they deserve to get robbed.

And good to see you again too.
As for alternative DVD covers, I found some here if anyone's interested.

Alright, I don't get what the whole deal is here. Now, as an outsider, I will probably believe whatever reason you give me, but we all know Georgie-boy isn't all that bright (runs with the name, I suppose ) but if you say you want what the original Star Wars was on DVD, and he gives that to you, I don't know why you're complaining. He simply took you literally.
PM me, we'll talk.
