Bragging rights to anyone who said Lucas would release only the altered films initially, but that he would release the originals about a year later, when all of the fans had given in and bought them (even I bought a copy, though I gave it to Chefelf). That way the die hards who preferred the originals but gave in would buy them again.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

I didn't purchase the set I have. Have not brought myself to watch all of ESB either (Bring me my shudder).

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd.

Yeah I'm sure that’s what they've been saying.

Me thinks the F word might have been used a tad bit more than Mr. Ward is letting on...

Wow, just got an email from srmoore about this and checked here to see if anyone else had commented. I'm truly surprised by this. I'm a little happy but also kinda ticked off that, like civ said, they waited until everyone else caved and now they're going to try to squeeze YET another trilogy out of us.

I've bought the start wars trilogy 3 times on VHS and once on DVD (thanks to civ). Why are we so stupid to continue buying?

Luckily, I didn't buy it at the time smile.gif
But this one, I'll buy it for sure.

But I completely understand what you feel. The exact same thing happened to me with the VHS version, I remember buying it, and just some months later, a different version appeared (the one with the silver box). Man was I pissed. After that, I promised never buying the trilogy again.

Then DVD technology showed up, and the DVD version of the trilogy was released, but I wasn't going to buy THAT. Now, apparently, Lucas has yet again found a way to suck my money.

Bwahaha! What a surprise. So much for Lucas's insistence that the original movies were 'dead' to him; I guess the lure of all that lovely, lovely money won out after all.

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

Here's where we need a scene of widdle Jake Lloyd telling Sebulba (or GL) how robbing people of their money is WRONG (Annie wags finger).

Not about time, but about money. Holds the originals hostage, and mocking us about our loyal devotion until we give in to get his dvds. Lying bastard. F-george!

Hi all. I've been lurking here since Episode II and I'm a huge fan of the "Reasons Why" stuff. Thank you ChefElf for the awesome work you've done and the time you, and anyone else involved in this site, have invested.

That being said... WOOHOO!! The O-OT! It's about f*****g time! biggrin.gif I knew he'd do it eventually, and I am so glad I never bought those worthless Uber-Editions. The only copies of the OT that I've ever purchased were some amazing ripped copies off of Ebay, that are so perfect it's scary. And my three sets of VHS, of course.

And just so we're clear to anyone reading this thinking "Yeah. You're getting the originals... No dolby 5.1, no digital restoration, no nothing. Haha" *pushes up taped glasses*

I say to that, thank God! This is exactly what I've wanted for years. I don't want anyone at LucasFilm to touch these. Isn't it obvious by now that anything they touch just becomes slightly worse? Look at those "precious" Uber-Editions. The color is all wrong on the sabers; all they did to make the picture more "crisp" is turn down the brightness, making the pic dark so you can't see the "mistakes"; and they even found a way to make Empire bad... something that I thought would be impossible. (and for the record, no, Empire is not my favorite of the OT, Jedi is, but even I can't argue with what an almost perfect film it is.) And shame on any of you NOT lovers for trying to stir up trouble, and be all holier than thou. Sorry....

I don't mean to rant, or sound like I'm hating on the N-OT lovers. That is not my intention. One of my best friends loves the NOT, and we agree to disagree. I can understand why some like them and chose to take them as the legitmate "vision of Lucas" and blah blah b.s. And I understand that most of the likers of the NOT are young and probably haven't had the chance to see the OT the way they were. Now that they're coming out, I hope some minds will be changed, but I know that some won't, and that's just fine by me. Let bygones be bygones. I'm just glad that we purists finally have the OT legitimately on DVD. Now my only concern is whether or not to buy them because then I'm throwing my money at the source of the problem (Lucas and Lucasfilm), not to mention the fact that I'll be stuck with a copy of the NOT. hmmm.....

p.s. -- that last line was tongue-in-cheek. Lighten up people. : )

I don't understand what all the fuss is about anyway, since I've only seen the German O-OT so far... ah, those were the times when there was still someone capable of decently translating and synchronizing a movie around.

Add digital blasphemy to it? Nah, it's alright like that. Did they really touch the lightsaber scenes with the same filthy cgi-fingers that made me hate AotC so much? crying.gif And ninety out of hundred movies use 5.1 sound only as an excuse to raise the price, so there.

*wanders off again*
