And before you ask, yes the authors of these various fan edits insist on people not selling their fan creations.

Other edits did the same and just cut in the deleted scenes from the DVD (when it finally came out).
Some of the latest edits I've seen are DVD quality and have Jar Jar, the Neimoidians and the Battle Droids speaking in a gibberish alien language with subtitles. Actually the "alien language" is just their lines reversed and sometimes remodulated a bit. So it's a bit obvious, but still.
The subtitles give them brand new lines to try to make things more serious.
As in an early draft of the script, Jar Jar wasn't going to just be "punished" he was going to be bludgeoned to death. The opening crawl was changed to have the Trade Federation involved in slave trade, not just protesting taxes. The group being "sent to the camps" are being sent to their executions (it's a death camp, not a simple prison).
The movie is a bit more watchable. Of course continuity errors are created by these changes with Episodes II and III, so those were re-edited as well (with new crawls, cuts, reverse speech/subtitles and some re-inserted deleted scenes). It's quite cool to watch though you may not agree with some of the cuts or insertions.
Once again see mysleen (and originaltrilogy.com forums) for details!
A few days to a week to download them. A half an hour to burn them to disc, watch and see for yourself! I don't personally have a problem with downloading these fan creations, as I own all the movies on DVD officially (plus three copies of the OT, two different versions!). So I've already paid my ticket to Lucas. ;p
But yeah, don't line somebody's pockets...

The only real way to revise the film, would be to incorporate custom CG and digital vocal manipulation into it. Simply editing out unwanted script & scenes, can make for more confusion than the orginal content held.

The Phantom Edit I.II is the DVD quality version. It also has a great commentary.
For the best Phantom Menace edit, check out Balance Of The Force by MagnoliaFan. He has a MySpace on it.

Yet the fact is GL kept it confusing and STILL included all of that garbage.
