I thought it was an excellent movie, i loved the appocalyptic looking oil field scenes, it created a great mood, and helped give an explanation to the maddness of the soldiers. there was virtually no violence in it, and i think that was the point. I believe this was an anti-war movie... am i right?

I don't think it was anti-war. It was just the reminiscences of an actual marine who took part in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I didn't get the impression that the film was creating an anti-war message. The final statement "Every war is different; every war is the same" sold it to me. The author felt a comeradeship with soldiers of all wars, esp of course American ones.
I think if you are already anti-war, you might get that message anyway, because some of the actions seemed futile, but I don't think that's what they were going for.

I didn’t see it myself, but my spousal unit did. He’s in the military and is definitely a pro-war kinda guy. He didn’t think it was anti-war at all. He said the movie was really weird though - that it had a really strange ending. I don’t know - I don’t really listen when he talks anymore. Usually his stories are all about how he kills Albs of Dark Age of Camelot. Usually I just smile and nod, and ever 15 or so seconds, through in a few “oh really”s and “wow, that’s awesome”s.
