I finally saw a film that I should have seen a long time ago. For awihle I have heard Dr. Hannibal Lecter touted as the greatest screen villian of all time. Now I can see, why. It was a pretty damn good film, and Dr. Lecter was just brilliant. This was the kind of villian that was greater than an archnemisis of any hero could ever hope of being. In a way, he's almost indescribeable. Throughout the film whilst watching, sure I wanted to know how they were going to get "Buffalo Bill", but I was far more interested in whatever the good doctor was up to. Anyone else ever have the plaesure of watching this film?
Apparently writing about JM here is his secret weakness. Muwahaha!!!! Now I have leverage over him and am another step closer towards my goal of world domination.

The seas shall become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked! And all creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!" - Mephisto

Are you kidding? A more appropriate question might be "Who HASN'T see this film?"

Yes, the relationship in that film was more between Lector and Starling, while the hunt for Buffalo Bill, himself scarcely characterised, is what HItchcock used to call a "McGuffin," a simple plot device to create the framework for the real story.

In my opinion, all of the other films wherein Anthony Hopkins plays Lecter are just terrible. In fact, I think Hopkins post-LAMBS is an utter hack. Mann's MANHUNTER is pretty good, but if you've seen LAMBS first you might have a hard time seeing a different actor portray Lecter.

Trivia: SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is one of only two films (the other being One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)) to win the top five Oscars - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay (Adapted). Anthony Hopkins was so impressive he was nominated for a leading actor Oscar for a role that comprises only 16 minutes of screen time.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

I agree with Civ that Hopkins went right down the hill after Silence of the Lambs. Proof - Joe Black. I just can't stand him ranting in that film, it is like watching someone you like going senile.

I like Silence of the Lambs also for one reason - it DID not convey to the screen all of the atrocities that were there in the book...

Anthony Hopkins jumped the shark after that film. Reminds me of post 1985 Phil Collins in a way. Of Course it was a great film, due in large part to that role. I went to the movies and saw it on impulse, 11 months or more after it was released (but before oscar season).

Madam Corvax, maybe you can answer this elementary question. Is the word "Silence" in the title, a verb? As if in facing her fears, JF's character "silenced" the lambs that haunted her? Just a thought.

It's not a verb. In that case a gerund would be required: "The Silencing of the Lambs."

To be honest I can't be sure what the title means. According to the story within the story, the screaming of the lambs haunts her dreams. To enjoy the silence, she would need to purge or resolve that painful memory. She doesn't actually answer Lecter's question at the end, "Have the lambs stopped their screaming?" I'm not sure either if in the back-story she ran to escape the sound or the knowledge that there was nothing she could do to stop the slaughter. So did Lecter call because, having saved a girl from slaughter she might be at peace? Did he call to let her know there as slaughter about to take place by his own hand that she would not be able to stop? Did he call to make sure her bad dreams would continue? Or was that just a typically badass way to end a horror film?

I'd say "D".

But I still think the film's name has to do with an action often described by the command: "SILENCE"! (albeit a gentle command in this case.)

I'll probably end up watching the other two films sometime, but I'll keep what you said in mind. Thank you.
