No. It was ham-handled at the end of ROTJ, not early at all. Early in the "saga," there was no Anikin and Luke's father was dead (then later he was alive somewhere else). Darth Vader was another guy altogether, and the Emperor was a poor puppet of the powers that be.
Right from the day he was created, Anikin was a weiner. Twenty years later, he was a weiner who shouted "yippee" and who won space battles out of blind luck. It's well documented that Lucas used THE HIDDEN FORTRESS as inspiration for STAR WARS. For THEPHANTOM MENACE I think he was inspired by the works of Buster Keaton.
