So, this is a graphic novel, but the characterization and plot are so incredible, as well as the length, that I'll be damned if this isnt better than 90 percent of what passes for novels these days.

Has anyone else read this and found it to be delightfully fucked? The poor villain is easily my favorite character. It's weird to have an evildoer that elicits more affection and even sympathy than the protagonist, but hell, maybe that's part of what makes the series great. I now own all 9 graphic novels and am about to finish the last two.

I'd just like to say that when a comic book series is ongoing like Preacher or like Sandman was, it can't use the term "graphic novel.". It's just a well-produced comic book series.

That's all I have to add. I have never read the Preacher stuff.

but its finished. There are 9 graphic novels in the collection. I would hate to see what the stack of seperate comic books looked like if someone had the full line.

Also, it appears Herr Starr gets his genitals chewed off by a rotweiler.... Shit.

Speaking of which, does anyone else see a lot of religious symbolism in the relationship between Starr, Featherstone and Hoover?

Those are Trade Paperbacks. Sometimes called Graphic Novel format. But still definitely comic books.

Of course, I HATE the term Graphic Novel. Its pretentious.

I hardly think so. There are some comics that are largely episodic, have no set character archs, and are just about ass kicking and good quips, and then there are comics, similiar to the serials which Dickens often employed, that are indeed pieces of a greater whole and have a clear story arc and character development. I think those comics deserve to be looked at with the same seriousness as a novel.

I agree completely. I'm all in favor of taking serious comics seriously.

I'd just rather call them comics when we do so.

but then no one outside the comic book world takes them seriously.

Wait, that was Gobbler's cue, wasn't it?

Edit: I had an opinion on the whole comic book/graphic novel matter but I really don't think its worth arguing over. I just think Graphic Novel is a needlessly pretentious term.
