my beef with R2 flying is from a more aeronautical standpoint, its just not possible. (Aerospace engineering school ruined a lot of star wars for me, like I can't see how a TIE fighter or the Falcon can fly in atmosphere without airfoils. What generates the lift again? )

Let me get back on topic, Just look at the rockets fire and the body lift off the ground, It shouldn't happen like that, the force should just generate a moment about the center of mass and flip him on his head and push him along the ground face first. Yknow, kind of like what would happen if you duct tape a roman candle to a GI Joe...they don't fly....they just spin around on the ground in spirals.

Yeah, if you strap a big enough rocket to a GI Joe you'll lift it, but not a slow controlled flight like R2 in the factory.

Now, i'll submit this post and wait for someone to rebut with anti-gravity.

As others have speculated, having a mechanic robot meant for repairing the outside of spaceships... well it makes sense to give him some kind of jet propulsion. Of course we never see him use it then only in a couple of situations to show off. And never in the classic trilogy when it might be useful here or there. On StarWars.com they try to explain it by saying one of R2's masters in between the trilogies had his jets removed (so I guess that would have been Captain Antilles, since the guy at the end of ROTS is supposed to be the same guy as Vader chokes in ANH).

Well yeah... but... why should they remove them? They seemed to come in pretty handy...

Because removal makes it even handier to explain.

Not really, since nobody's going to believe such a weak excuse for an explanation.

Except for some really stupid people... hmm... that's still 5 billion people, I guess...

They could easily fix it by having a Jawa do it after they've been captured.

well, OK if you like, but I think thats the kind of stuff you're supposed to put on hold, along with cities in the sky and lightsabres.

D- yes, its stupid, but it seems better than "they removed them for some reason". Makes logical sense at least.

I appreciate Jawas removing flight capability from R2, and the rebels never getting around to adding it, but why didn't R2 fly before captured, to determine the exact location of a nearby city? I know he had some "technical" reason to lead 3P0 in the direction they were going, but a scan by air could have been profitable, and they had no reason to believe it would be dangerous.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).
