Take a look at the difference between these two pages:
http://images.google...ges?q=tiananmen
and
http://images.google...ges?q=tiananmen

I remember when a friend of mine in highschool went back to visit family in China, and he said they didn't know anything about the massacr. I thought he was joking at first, but he was quite serious about it. It's rather disturbing that the government can keep 1 billion people in the dark about this.

Edit: Had to fix misspelling of censorship in the title.

I read about that as they planned to filter in-depth, sounds like they are using oppression to knowledge as a method of restriction, so people don't think to ask questions and information gets modified to a pretty way in order to force feed their own image of rights down citizens.

China censors the hell out of the net, but I might be biased seeing as I've had dealings with them before.

Why do some people here appear to be obsessed in stating about others getting pregnant? And body parts as well, maybe a thread on biology for those who are interested in this area may provide proper assistance. Anyway not so important compared to how they try to oppose everything in general to control a large population. I did hear that they limit two people to one child. Okay but they are not so biased about selling me poorly made electrical goods that pose fire risks.

I assume China has its reasons. And I assume they're very bad ones. At risk of annoying JM, this is the reason I don't think communism would work: the people who would implement it. Does everyone have to be equally ignorant too?

*insert generic whiny "Animal Farm" comparisons*

... Do any of you realize that there is no correlation between a google image search and censorship? Google ranks pages according to popularity (like how many pages reference it, it's website traffic, that happy crappy), so when you search for something, you see the results of a popularity contest.

Now, if you'd said from the beginning that Google built a custom search engine for China so it can censor what it wants from searches, then I'd have known more accurately what you were talking about and also not typed up that first paragraph.

Other interesting news: The US Justice Department is actually filing a court order to force Google to give it a log of one million search queries that are entered into the website. ^

I didn't mention the .cn domain? Oh, sorry, that was in another conversation. I thought I'd mentioned that at the top.

Why don't you ask the kids on tiananmen square? I don't believe in any kind of censorship at all, freedom of speech and information is a vital need to prevent fascism.

Well yes, but who's responsible for correcting such an obvious mistake now? The companies which are involved in this censorship, i.e. Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Cisco Systems, etc., or the united nations?

I’m sure there are lots of countries that do it. That’s a lot of explosives.

And I'm sure that enforcing freedom of thought and speech with weapons somehow reduces the topic to absurdity.
