Galeic is soccer, but you can kick the ball into your hands. After a few steps, you have to bounce the ball, then a few more you have to kick it to yourself if you haven't gotten rid of it yet. I think apart from that it's mostly the same as soccer, though you may be able to tack opponents. It's been years since I've played it. AFL(short for Australian Football League, but is also used as shorthand for Aussie Rules Football)is played with a more ovoid ball, larger then a gridiron ball, but less pointy. Players can pick the ball up and run with it, but must bounce it every ten metres or so. They can pass the ball by kicking it, or handballing it(placing it on one hand, and punching it with the other). If somebody kicks the ball and you catch it on the full, it's called a mark and you get a free kick. The goals consist of four posts, two large ones in the centre, and two smaller ones outside them. Kicking the ball between the middle posts is a goal, six points. Between the outer ones is only worth one point. You could probably get a better idea of the rules if you look up some of the official sites.
As Australia is the only country that plays AFL, and Ireland the only ones that play Gaelic(or at least play it seriously), each year we have an 'International Rules' tournament, where the two countries put forward a team each and play three games whos rules are a hybrid between the two sports. That's actually really good to watch.

But in real Football you can't grab the ball, and that's so different.

But the point I was making is the rest of the rules are about the same. Of course you can't pick the ball up in football, that's why gaelic football is a different sport.

I'd be happy to see a sports fourm, but as Chef mentioned only if it's getting traffic and content. I'm pretty keen on sports and really enjoy playing and watching a varied array.

As Sime mentioned the hybrid rules for Gaelic and Australian Rules Football is a great game to watch. I'll admit that at this point in time in Australia it's a sportsmans heavan.

We have just had a cricket test series. We are currently in the middle of a one day cricket tri-series with Sri-Lanka and South Africa that also saw the introduction of the Twenty20 cricket game to Australia. At the same time as this we have the Commonwealth Games swimming trials (otherwise known as the Australina Titles). The Winter Olympics are about to start and hot on the heals of the we have the Commonwealth Games being hosted in here in Melbourne.

Super 14 rugby is about to start, the National Basketball League and WNBL has been underway for a while. Netball is going great guns also. The Rugby League and AFL are starting their trial games and soccer is also in full swing.

And the best part is that all of these are screened on TV (with the exception of the League and AFL trial games).

I love living in a sprots mad country!

As somebody who's not much of a sports fan, I can't say I'm quite as happy as you are...but as I work at sports venues, it does mean more shifts for me tongue.gif

I'm mostly a cashier(ticket seller), but I also work on the gates. Most of my work is at Subiaco Oval(West Coast, Dockers and now the Western Force), but I pick up the odd shift at the WACA(various cricket) and whatever the soccer ovals called these days(for the Glory games).

Superb! Does it often allow you a look at the events or are they fairly strict on that sort of thing?

I can usually watch the second half, but to be honest I'm really not interested, so I just go home before the rush instead.

I think we can call this thread the Sports Forum. I think that 95% of the posts regarding sports have been in this topic.

Anyone besides me surprised that all (all I heard anyway) of the musical selections which served as background while the athletes paraded in, were thirty-year old popular American hits?

Alas poor Meco, left out from their rightful place.
