20 minutes ago: Emu is grouchy because people are being stupid ("waah! we can't have an empty cylinder that formerly contained liquid nitrogen in our building! it's dangerous!) and because she hasn't eaten.

15 minutes ago: Emu recieves an email: free leftover matzo ball soup!

Remember Emu's face, people; one day it's going to be on the news alongside a headline about blowing some landmark to smithereens, and then we can all sigh and say, "She was such a normal person".....

HA! Turns out that the beautiful, beautiful Management and Economics Academy - at which I'm matriculated - is an even more beautiful sub-division of the University of Cooperative Education, but~~~ - and this is the fun part - not subject to the rather new law which enables universities here to demand some kind of special tuition from its students which is supposed to be used for improving our education.

Which, ultimately, means that they cannot charge me one thousand Euros a year - which is an insanely huge amount for a struggling student - but have to refund me the money which I've already paid. Plus interest! Yey! Woo!

This is like Easter, I tell ya that.

Yeah, isn't it funny how everything feels all Easter-y right now? tongue.gif

Let's see, 1,000 Euros equals 1,338 American dollars (thanks, Internet currency calculator!)...to cover a whole year? Including room and board I get charged twice that or more for one semester!

But HOORAY! You get an ass-load of money back!

Wow. I wish I was a European. My college costs over $10,000 just for tuition, and it's not even a private school. Luckily I'm a poor geek and qualify for enough scholarships to get me through, but still... That's crazy, the difference there.

Yeah, I sorta expected that reaction... really, I wouldn't know how the hell you're supposed to come up with that much money without any scholarships. I mean, I'm already getting paid pretty well compared to the usual student, but I could only make around 6600 Euros (8 850.6 US$) a year... if I didn't have any living expenses.

How does the usual American do that?

They sell their souls to banks and other loan companies. Seriously. Kids get out of college with a debt of anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000 most of the time. Plus interest. I know lots of people in their 30s or even 40s still paying off their college loans. That's why I decided to be born smart, so I could get the academic scholarships. I also decided to be born poor, so I could get the government to make up for the rest. biggrin.gif

That's... mellow.gif... beyond my already quite small ability to express things in words...

Well, hooray for scholarships it is, then. Way to go, Miss Poetic. Hope you won't end up with insanely huge debts after you're done.

I don't understand why anybody is expected to pay for uni whilst they're there. In Australia, any Australian or New Zealand citizen that gets into uni can elect to have the government cover their education in the form of an interest free loan, which doesn't have to be paid back until you start earning a certain amount per year. Thus, you don't pay for your tutelage until you have a job that lets you afford it. Otherwise you end up with a system that only educates the rich, leading to a greater rift between classes.

Ok, and now to comment on the things mentioned in my absence. Firstly, congratulations Ms Poetic on your surgery results, that's great news.

Secondly, thanks go to Jane for alerting me to the fact that the new Dr Who has started in the UK.

Ah, seventeen. Good age to be - one of my personal favorites. thumbsup.gif

Well, ignoring that you're still too young to vote or drink or be considered a legal adult (at least unless you commit some horrible crime, then they'll call you an adult anyway)...good year.
