I just thought of something that Lucas seems to be obsessed with when I was considering how unecessary some of the PT's battles were. Consider this:

2 trilogies
always 2 sith
2 duels with dooku
2 duels with sidious
2 duels between Vader and Luke
2 duels between Vader and Kenobi
2 duels with Maul
2 deathstars
2 Skywalker twins
2 battles against Nute Gun Rey
2 fights with frickin Jango Fett
2 assassination attempts on Amidala
2 votes in the senate to make Palps a dictator

some of the things aren't such a big deal, but the constant need to repeat every fight that ever happens ever is a bit annoying. The two fights with Palpatine in ROTS were unnecessary as were the fights with Grievous. When you look at the stuff they had to cut to accomodate those two scenes it really is infuriating.

Yes George lucas must be obsessed with the number two. OUt of 6 2 hour movies there are bound to be some things repeated. I mean this is coming from a guy who just spent an evening thinking of things that happen twice in star wars just to accuse the director of being obsesses.
Wow.

There are bound to be some things repeated. But JM's right. It is a bit of a coincidence.

There are only 4 things in his list that really count
2 deathstars
2 trilogies
2 sith
2 twins

thats not even a coincidence per movie. this is just relentless nitpicking.

I think what gets me, and it's more in the prequels than the OT, is that every bad guy, even Jango Fett, has to be fought twice to die. I really think that given the poor characterization they should have tried to cut down and condense some of the battles in favor of giving a little more time to description and laying out a plot clearly.

The PT also is king of showing battles that have little or no reason to exist plot-wise or change events in a dramatic way. Jango Fett, if he were the best bounty hunter as it was claimed, would have no doubt been used to the fact that any opponent of his on several occassions tried to plant a homing beacon on his ship to follow him, and hence have the Slave I have some kind of countermeasure to deal with them as he was taking off. The whole "I'll put up a fight good enough for the Jedi to follow me and hence discover the whereabouts of the Separatists and the need to use the Clone Army" is also wearing thin by the time we see it.

always 2 sith

The 2 sith thing ALWAYS bothered me. 2 is such a mundane number. Why not three - three is creative force, three is mystical. Besides, its stupid. Why not have a second apprentice waiting around just in case your good one gets sliced in half. Seems like somebody smart enough to take over the entire galaxy would be well versed in the ways of contingency plans. And that way - instead of having to recruit some old fuck you can have one waiting around that you've been training since they could walk.

Or how about Palpatine going down the hall after Vader's built and you see the Sith dude who can shoot his load across the galaxy to Tattooine to "create new life" hooked up to a bunch of machines, all old, worn out, being there for ages as Palpatine pulls the plug saying "I am the master NOW!"

I guess with the Jedi being portrayed as such idiots in the PT, two Sith can take them on and win brilliantly, especially if one's doing the paperwork and the other's punching the clock after fighting them all.
