A star wars film written around 30 year old WW2 fighter plane footage.

Can you think of a better reason to describe why the OT sucked?

as i recall plane footage was used for missing FX shots during test screenings for ILM. it wasn't used for the screenplay of an enitre film.

I liked those space battles. Well defined, not too busy with a sense of pacing and tension. I miss them.

The whole thing was culled, shot for shot, from old WW2 archive footage.

can you offer an objective critisicm of the podrace that can't also be leveled at that space battle? (they made a video game out of it too, so theres your first one gone wink.gif )

I don't go to Star Wars movies to see some flimsy set piece.

I DO like Space Battles with pacing and footage like I've never seen before.

Which does not apply to the podrace. One lap would've been enough. Lap 2? seen it. Lap 3? ditto. Annie's goggles? Not compelling or maybe I'm just too mature to enjoy these movies.

really, so when the screenplay was wriiten and handed over it had references to WWII battles all the way through? im talking about over a third of a star wars film's plot handed over to a go kart race, not the end battle of SW: ANH. there's nothing enthralling or mystical about it. it's a waste of time, and a triumph of action set pieces over story.

with lucas' independance and financial positon in the prequels, he was free to do anything he liked. he loves cars and racing, so he decided to put that love into a fantasy space film about a far off distant galaxy. if they had the technology to do this when the OT was made, his idea would discarded straight away, probably as a joke. with people in other creative postions during the originals (namely Kurtz and kasdan) this type of crap was kept well away from the originals. since Lucas had control over everything in the PT, sadly this type of stuff seaped in much to the expense of the film. The space battle was the climax of the film and was necessary as an exciting conclusion to the story - the podrace was contrived just to get it into the film.

Big difference is that the end battle in ANH was set up earlier in the movie. What was the point of Leia running with the stolen DS plans if not to find a way to destroy it? Were the Rebels going to let their base get blown up? The podrace...that came way out of left field. No setup, no decent reason for it to be there except to somehow pump up a movie that was really dragging at that point.

if you think about it, the first half plot is designed to get a podrace going. why would qui gon, a jedi, give up on a toydarian who is immune to mind tricks and walk away? why doesn't he pull out his lightsabre and demand the parts, citing the enormity of the situation with people dying on naboo? he just walks away casually. he's a jedi, but his mission is to save people. surly they're not arguing about the ethics of robbing a corrupt slave owner of his parts? was that really a poorer solution than waiting for days to put a bet on a car race?

then, you got anakin making a bet to free himself. why? why doesn't qui gon and obi wan come round and threaten watto to free both of them? it's almost as lame as the two jedi wimping out at the beginning of the film when two driods who walk 1 mile an hour scare them away, thus not reaching the viceroy and ending everything there.
