Well, anyone who's a Star Wars fan doesn't anyway. Because we know. We knew even before we paid the tickets for TPM. The whole PT is about Anakin becoming a Jedi, then being seduced by the dark side...

And that, by far, is my biggest problem with the whole pod race.

That it is so forseeable.

Did you ever doubt that Luke would destroy the Death Star?

No.

Did you ever doubt that Bond would save the day and get the girl?

No.

The fun is the journey, not the obvious conclusion.

p.s im in Korea waiting for a flight.

That's not an excuse for lack of surprises. I mean I was ready for an "Anakin, I'm your cousin" kind of surprise, but we there were none apart from maybe order 69.

It was, sort of. 500 won for 15 minutes! Even though i'm still not sure exactly how much 500 won is.

Anyway normal service will be resumed soon-ish.

I was sat in Incheon airport in Seoul waiting for my flight back to Japan and I decided to use the internet which cost 500 won per 15 minutes.

The whole thing was culled, shot for shot, from old WW2 archive footage.

can you offer an objective critisicm of the podrace that can't also be leveled at that space battle? (they made a video game out of it too, so theres your first one gone wink.gif )

WW2 fighter/bomber footage is way cooler than some cars running around a track over and over. The latter was old hat even when TPM was released! It still is.

WW2 was a once in a lifetime event.

(I'm going to regret getting into this discussion)

Let me put this as best as I can. The Death Star run works because it is an immediate reaction to immediate threat. They DS is approaching, they launch ships in a desperate act to save the rebels. Simple. Pure. Ideal.

The pod race is completely INDIRECT response to a threat that is first off, uncertain and ridiculous ("thousands dying by starvation? in just a day or two??").. and even if the threat was real and certain, and the heroes DESPERATELY need to save them, then they chose the stupidest and SLOWEST and UNCERTAIN means to accomplish their goal. Get a slave boy from a slave-driver to race him in a pod-race, which he's never placed in, get money from the pod-race, pay for parts, fix the ship, get off planet, get to Coruscant, talk to Senate, talk to Jedi Council---AND PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSEDLY DYING!!!!????? (And as an aside, they also take the time to vote out the current Chancellor, nominate a new chancellor, and vote him in!! ARGH_BARF!!!!)

If the situation was so desperate and so intense---the last and least thing to do is muck about with a slave boy and stupid pod races!!! I don't care if he's the "Chosen One" The boy was going nowhere, he was being treated well, Qui-Gon could've found another way to get off the planet (he's a rogue Jedi anyway), and then come back in a month or two seeking his release with mucho-more traded-in credits!

This IS a pure waste of film. "Filler" and Lucas admits it himself.

I wish TPM WAS as "simple" as ANH. We wouldn't have the BS we have in these prequels.

"That's all I have to say about that."
Flying Ferret

Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

I’ll never in a million years suggest that TPM even comes close to being half the film that ANH is, but honestly, seriously, the pod race works in exactly the same way as that end space battle. If I’m going to look at the thing objectively, I’d say it works better, as Lucas seemed to have put more effort into the mechanics of it.

Isn't your favorite argument, PT = OT ?
aren't they all pop corn movies as in switch off your brain and go for the ride?

Now Star Wars (as in Ep4) is better than TPM?

care to take a stab at my comment?

Well, Jariten, I see your point of view.
Do I know how any given James Bond movie ends? Yes, I do. Does it spoil the fun watching it? No.
And if you like TPM, that's fine with me. I really don't like to bash people who like the PT.

I like to bash the PT, though.
Did I wonder if Luke survives the Trench run? Since TESB was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw, most likely not.
Did it spoil the fun watching the showdown? No.

But I'd like to point out something else. The pod race is NOT like the trench run. The scenes mirroring the trench run in TPM would be Anakin destroying the TF Controll ship. It's cruical to the movie that he masters that task just like the destruction of the Death Star is important to the rebellion in ANH.
The pod race on the other hand brings said main arc to a screening halt, introducing us to Ani and his raise and fall. I know that there's a reason for that, but nothing is going to convince me that it could not have done better.

funny WW1 and 2 should come into this... becuase the one thing the both had was 19 year old pilots (the red baron for one). what the didn't have was 8 year old pilots.
