I was wondering around Osaka yesterday taking a little xmas break when I noticed that HotD4 was out.
I've no idea when it was released, and since i've got a soft spot for shooting games and HotD in general, I tried it out.

It's...ok. It doesn't really seem like a massive step up from HotD3. The two main differences are replacing the shotgun with a machine gun, and since that gives you more ammo, they've almost doubled the amount of zombies coming at you.

Apart from that, zombies and bosses occasionally grab you, and in order to break free you have to rattle the gun hard up and down. Which hurts the fingers and makes you look like a bit of a spaz (try not to make a strange face while doing it).

Theres also grenades, which you throw with the press of a grey button on the side of the gun. Thats a new thing for HotD, but its an old thing for shooting games in general.

The first boss (the furthest I got), is pretty tiresome too. Its almost a carbon copy of that security guard boss from HofD 3.

I was really hoping for something more innovative I suppose. You can see some pictures of it here.
The Japanese over the game reads 'NO PHOTOGRAPHY!'

I was about to post something about how the shotguns on HOTD3 where the best thing since konami bolted a sniper rifle to an arcade machine, but then I saw that picture of the japanese guy using both uzi's at the same time....

That's got to be worth at least one shot for the amusement. devil.gif

The links not working.

And I think the dead horse that is HotD has been beaten a bit too much. Its brain is leaking out, and you can see his insides...

EDIT: Got link to work. Same game, better graphics, different gun, pointless new feature, yada yada yada.

Really? I thought they were kind of lame. Using the pump action was cool, but it didn't fire like a shotgun. There was no spread, it was more like a rifle.

Unless I'm thinking of a different game, but I'm pretty sure that the one I was playing was HOTD3

There was a third one? We still only have HotD2 machines around these climes.
The Green Knight, SimeSublime the Puffinesque, liker of chips and hunter of gnomes.
JM's official press secretary, scientific advisor, diplomat and apparent antagonist?

since the second one was the last good one, i'd like to have another bash at it. I can't find it anymore though.

Any arcade in perth would be able to help you out then.

Shotguns are generally pretty accurate at short zombie maiming distances, most games give the a ridiculous amount of scatter to stop them from being a dominant weapon. On long shots it did scatter enough to cover areas, like the one in halo.

The one in Halo was only worth firing at short range anyways. Long range it spread too far and was dominated by the pistol anyways.

In deathmatch, aye, but in single player terms against it's pre-set opponants (the flood), it excelled at all ranges.

Same with HOTD3s zombies.

But they're both good examples of reasonable shotgun mechanics, unlike some games which seem to think that 10 meters is an unacceptable accurate range.

Nothing beats Typing of the Dead. The main characters have Dreamcasts attached to their backs and keyboards hanging from their necks instead of wielding guns. biggrin.gif

Yeah, it's good against the flood at all ranges, but anything else (even grunts), you need to keep it short to medium. Of course, it doesn't really matter with the flood because they're always at short range anyways.
