QUOTE (Giff @ Jan 6 2006, 10:01 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Case in point:

"Each day on Pluto takes 6.39 Earth days. Each year on Pluto takes 247.7 Earth years (that is, it takes 247.7 Earth years for Pluto to orbit the Sun once)." SOURCE

So for instance, perhaps it takes 15-20 days(or longer) on Bespin or Hoth or near an asteroid field or wherever to make a full year on the dagobah system.

you dont know the placement of suns and the way in which time is concieved. For all you know....Luke could have been on Dagobah for 9-12 months...assuming a year on Dagobah is even 12 months of 30 or 31 different 24 hour days...

See where I'm going with this?

If that is the point you are trying to make, then does that mean it took 8 months for Luke's X-Wing to nearly sink to the bottom of the swamp? Seems to me his X-Wing could have sank to the bottom of that swamp in one day.

Maybe...maybe not.

When it took over, did the Empire establish "Galactic Standard Time" ?

Given thier dark tendencies, I'd wager they did away with daylight savings time.

Hahaha!

Anyway, I get what you're saying, Giff, but let's think about this, even if a "day" is say, six hours on one world and let's say 12 hours on another world, does that mean a person ages faster on the six hour days go by faster? I don't think shorter or longer days really mean much when the body still ages at it's own rate despite these things---or I could be way off, I'm no biologist.

I think, let's look at this way, let's just say, that for worlds to maintain life, they have to be somewhat similar to earth... okay.. I already see problems with ideas on this, but... let's say a 20-24 hour timespanse is the general time frame that a planet needs to sustain life? Then, any world that does have life on it in the SW universe, is going to have relatively the same hours in a day. Would that make sense? Rather than try to be all exotic, why not just be pedestrian? I mean, the SW universe, after all, is an "everyman's" place (well, at least it was before the PT), and things are going to be generally the same. It looks like majority of species breathe oxygen... so, next step, they generally have the same amount of time on every planet.

Rather simple, but that's what I liked about the OT before the dark times....

I know where you're coming from....the concept of time is just fascinating to me, so I wanted to make a post about it.

Considering how quickly the three loser Jedi a-holes went down in no time flat when they attempted to arrest Palpatine in his office, I think Luke got the equivalent of a four year education with one on one mentoring by Yoda. So he didn't learn how to slouch in a chair and look cool in a robe in the Jedi Council. Considering the bang up job Yoda did in part by training those losers, I think the little green guy had the need, inclination, and time to cut it all down to what was needed and little else. Besides, Yoda and Obi Wan weren't banking on a Jedi/Sith confrontation so much as a Father/Son one.

We all seem to be a little unclear on the amount of time that had passed during Luke's training. If you're reading this George, next time you decide to add 'improvements' to the OT can you put an extremely intrusive CGI 'space calender' in the Falcon's cockpit on Hoth and then show it again when it arrives on Cloud City. Cheers.

One point I'd like to bring up. Where is the Bespin system in relation to the Hoth system? How about Hoth and Dagobah? I like looking at the different star maps (I think I've seen three different ones now) so I have some kind of bearing while I'm reading the novels. In two of the star maps, it shows Bespin located just a little distance away from Hoth. Dagobah is at least four or five times the distance. That doesn't seem to help matters out any. The only thing I can think of is this: Luke must have trained under Ben Kenobi's tutelage for at least a little bit. That would explain half of it. If they weren't using the hyperdrive engines on the Falcon and Luke was in the X-Wing... that helps out a little. Luke may have been on Dagobah training for a few weeks at the most. I think most of the actual hands on training happened off-screen, though.
