Yeah.. why is the second episode taking so long to air?
And also: Is the series anything close to the book? is it better? should I get the book?
I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

This series, both books and HBO, has been talked about endlessly on my favorite nerd blog, www.toplessrobot.com and I finally started reading the books. That was last week. I'm now around 3000 pages in, reading the 4th in the series! Martin's writing is incredible, the story ties together but not at the cost of the characters' individuality or charm, and there are plot twists that make sense and arent just there for shock value. I will definitely be buying the series on DVD if given the chance.

Oh yeah... this thread.

Dance with Dragons was fun. 5 damn years of waiting.

Now I'll just have to find something else to do with my time while I wait for season 2 of the show.

Barend - I've found the last 2 books to be somewhat wanting, whereas the first 3 were absolutely fantastic. The narrative seems to be kind of puttering out, though I hope I'm wrong about that,

Gobbler - Yep, I read it in 2 days. Straight.

Well with that much butchery and sex contained in the first volumes already, I doubt anyone could read it in 2 days queer.

The latest 2 books havent been up to the standards of the earlier ones, I think Martin is kind of getting a bit lost.

Aye, same opinion here... we're five books in the game now, and things are only very barely starting to get together, while Martin's still introducing new plots and characters all the while.

And holy shit - book five's ending was less than satisfactory. Kinda like Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Only worse. Take Daenerys' whole last chapter. What the eff was the point of that? Some important author (I forgot who, stone me) once said something along the lines of "If a sentence of your book doesn't serve to develop character or further the plot - then leave it out" - and I agree. It's more and more like reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Sure, nice books, nice stories, lots of detail... but somewhere after the three-thousandth poetic description of a tree it all appears a bit too pretentious and you start skimming paragraphs or even whole pages for something - anything - plot relevant.

*sighs* And then there's the matter of Martin's failing health. Took five years for the last book, and the way I see it, he'll need at least two more books to come to an end... good luck with that.

Yeah, it's getting a bit out of control. Daenary's was wasting an incredible amount of time doing ultimately nothing. The fact that her stuff comes good in the epilogue made me feel a little empty, but excited for the next book. Also, I was glad that Bran finally gets to the fireworks factory.

Also, screw page 913.

Other than that though I rather enjoyed reading the thing.

*looks up page 913*

... yep. I'm worried that this particular character will develop similar to Catelyn now...

I think the thing that disappointed me most was... the boring dragons. I mean, what the hell, they weren't dancing at all. :(

Jon Snow is not only alive, but he's a Targaryen. Also, I have no idea what Dany and Arya are doing anymore, and I really give zero fucks after 2 books of them doing nothing. I just want more Jamie, Tyrion and Cersei.

Dany can go straight to hell, she's prolly gonna end up doing the whole Targaryen incest thingy with Jon anyways.

But Arya, that might turn out good. Someone who gets detached enough from the rest to stand up, smile at everyone and then just kill whatever comes into the way of the plot... if she ever gets over that bloody stupid "No, don't. Wait. We show you how, but you can't use it indiscriminately. You must use it wisely." bullshit.

Next life I'll be an assassin too, should be way more fun than being a technology consultant. Or I'll send one of my future children off to learn the trade.

I have no idea what Dany is about but I still rather like her. I kinda hope she gets the throne in the end cuz she really deserves it. Of all the characters she's grown the most... despite plateauing recently.

I know Arya is meant to do something great, but she just seems really boring lately too. Also, I'm sure if she kills somebody they'll stay dead, so thats good at least.

So, Jon Snow is now with Stannis, or at least Mellisandre... what about the rest of the Night Watch?
