Spore. I think that's what the game is called.

I think its been in production for awhile but if you've seen some of the preview stuff, it look cool. For the creature editor you just draw a random shape, and attach body parts and such to it.

Should be getting my copy on Thursday. The DRM is kinda sucky, but hopefully they'll do the same as Bioshock and disable it after about a year.

Before I thought that it was largely average, which a few twists, community features, and other stuff. But now, I'm pretty far on in the game, I've got an empire of about 25 systems, quite alot of money and technology. The scale of the game is simply insane.

Also, using teraforming tools as a weapon is fricken awesome, turning your enemy's lush paradise homeworld into a barren void, incapable of sustaining any life at all. Really annoys them too.

Did anyone see the anti-Spore website, said to be run by creationists, that turned out to be a rickroll? I heard about it on the Austalian Gamer podcast, and it has got to be the most successful rickroll in the entire world. Well, it made me laugh, anyway.

You would think that by the fact that you "create" the creatures in the game, they would agree whole heartedly with it...

*edit* After reading the site further, its actually quite funny.

Well, they'd written something about Will Wright being a member of some church (that I can't remember the name of), and that it supports gay people or something... and this was relevant to what Spore was teaching children.

And technically, Spore teaches evolution, not creationism. tongue.gif

"Spore teaches evolution", hmm. I doubt you were able to keep a straight face when you wrote that down.

Anyway, downloaded the game ILLEGALLY to see if it was any good (and to avoid all that abuse legal buyers have to put up with). It's not, it's boring, repetitive shit, although the creature creator is vaguely amusing.

Well, as far as a game can teach you something, it does.
"Spore is a multi-genre "massively single-player online game developed by Maxis and designed by Will Wright. It allows a player to control the evolution of a species from its beginnings as a unicellular organism, through development as an intelligent and social creature, to interstellar exploration as a spacefaring culture."

That's not evolution...?

Fair enough, you're being a "God", and you're controlling it all, but it's still more evolutionary. If you weren't to control it all, it would be a wicked boring game.

Au contraire, controlling and micromanaging every little thing is the key to boredom, I'd rather have something where I can set a few key points here and there and then watch my underlings react in some kind of way. Make them and their decision making routines intelligent enough to not be obnoxiously stupid, yet still have them depend on your actions here and there.

Personally, I'd work my god-mojo in this fashion for a few generations until a certain imperative becomes embedded into their very own DNA, something like "Floss every day." or "Jumping into volcanos is great fun!".

But that's the point where a useful AI comes into play again, so I guess I'll have to keep waiting for that kind of game.

Edit: Or just go back to playing Lemmings.

I wasn't disappointed when I first played it, it wasn't till I reach about halfway through the space stage that I finally realized: This was it. Then I was disappointed that I had wasted all that time on this. I should have bought Stalker: Clear Sky.

I'd hardly call this game educational, for a number of reasons. For instance, the transition between evolutionary stages is as subtle as a half brick thrown in the face. After a few billion years (3 minutes) you suddenly cease being a unicellular organism, get a pair of feet plopped on you and start the animal phase. During that, you aren't really restricted what body parts to use, and there aren't really any factors present to influence the evolution of the species. All that matters is your diet. If you're a carnivore, then you put on some beat-up hands and morning stars on your tail, if herbavore then you screw musical instruments on your ass to appeal to the other races. You can change every aspect of your monster arbitrarily everytime you make them fuck. That ain't what evolution is about. If this were a game intended to educate young people, then more restrictions should be applied, at least.

Oh yeah, the AI sucks camel farts and every phase after the animal one is a joke.

I sure am glad I'm not the only one that thought this game came highly overrated. I keep getting flamed for giving my opinion that the game isn't all that great.
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

I don't think it's the revolutionary genre mashup that was advertised, but I'm still really enjoying it. It's fun.
