For starters, the Offspring are a surf-punk band (surf punk being punk rock with a somewhat uplifting quality about the melodies and vocals) although their first album was quite dark and disturbing, if you listen to their first couple of albums you can see where the "punk" thing came from.
In a way, the Dead Kennedys (while I love them) completely go against everything punk is supposed to be. From the band members suing Jello for rights to all of the DK music so that they can license it to soundtracks (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Freddy Got Fingered), to Jello himself going on and on about politics, and then not even voting (rather hypocritical, don't you think?), they've sort of destroyed everything that they once stood for. But who cares about what Maximum Rock And Roll says? That's an awful rag of a publication.
And I beg to differ on the "godfather of punk" thing. No one is truly the creator and lord of all things punk, "punk" itself is just an industry buzz word. Like "nu metal" or "screamo". However, if I had to choose just one guy, it would be down to the teeth between Iggy Pop, and Johnny Cash.

I've never heard "Surf punk" before. And at first I thought you were talking about America's favorite snack food.

And Johnny Cash scares me. I think he's going to claw his way out of the grave and strangle me in my sleep. I'm going to lock my doors now...

Punk was about going against what the mainstream dictated was good music.
the Deak Kennedys, the Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks, the Clash, the Rammones, were doing something different, but like everything else mainstream media got in there and screwwed it all up. like 'Industrial' music... Ramstein is NOT indstrial, it's the exact opposite, snuggled nicley into it's well defined narrow borders, completely defeating what 'industril' was all about, yeah they're all buzz words, but you do need to classify music wether it be metal, punk, ambient, classical, dance, jazz, blues, bebop, etc. otherwise record stores would be a shambles!!!

and the offspring are pop music.

maybe 'smurf punk' tongue.gif

****************************************************
and Jello Biafra ran for Mayor of SF so he did have a hands on appraoch to pollitics, plus he's still doing the same things with, LARD, Tumor Circus, and spoken word stuff... as for the other members, they seem to have forgotten what band they were in. happy to sell 'holiday in cambodia' to levis jeans. the irony of that one will never leave me... blink.gif

At this point in time I cannot in good conscience vote as there appears to be one category missing. It's the one that says - Nuke the U.S. and leave all other countries to work it out.

Save it for the music forums, weirdos.
Booze-fueled paragon of pointless cruelty and wanton sadism.

But I rarely go to the music forum and what did the topic have to do with music anyway. I don't understand how it all got out of control?????

I'm just looking for equality in polling. wink.gif

Of course if your response was directed only to those making music references then please disregard all of the above except for the second paragraph. I am campaigning for, A Fair Poll for Everyone! biggrin.gif

Well, everyone should know that the nuke everybody but the US was put in there as a joke, and I'm sorry I didn't put the just nuke the US in. I'd do it now, but it would skew the poll results... unless maybe I can reset it or something... I'll see what I can do.

You are a gentleman and a scholar Slade. But if it's going to cause issues with the current poll don't worry about it. It's been fun so far, no harm in stopping it now by letting me get my way. biggrin.gif
