I have heard rumors. Terrible rumors. THey are of pain,.... suffering,.....Death. I was checking out release times for a box set of all 6 star wars films when i found out that old george is making another special edition of the ot on dvd this christmas. I am furious and hope some one can assassinate him before december. however, if this does happen, what scenes would you not want them to change and which scenes will you want them to change. Im certain that lucas will say that this was his actual original vision.

If there is one thing in the OT Lucas must now change, it's the scene in Return of the Jedi where Luke and Leia are discussing their mother. The best way to alter this scene would be to just cut it. I wouldn't have any problem with this since I always thought it was a horrible scene. But then again, they need to have some way of Luke telling the group he is going to turn himself over to Vader. I honestly don't know how they could correct this.

Lucas also needs to get rid of that shitty scene in ESB where Vader travels from Cloud City to his Star Destroyer.

If he undid a good number of things he added for the Special Edition that would be great. Lucas has an ingrained habit of rereleasing the same film over and over with a slight tweak here and there. This one comes quite quickly since it was a year or so ago when the OT was released on DVD. I wou'dn't be surprised if there weren't a lot of bells and whistles added, and it was just a pachage of films I-VI with new art and a bonus disk of previously available material. I don't know what else he could do a documentary on regarding the PT or behind the scenes of it that would make us care.

The line "Bring my shuttle" needs to make a return, also.

Dude you've got some issues.
You have to take the good with the bad.

Now that I've seen how many people are involved in making these films via the In a Minute DVD commentary It's a wonder you have any cohesive story at all.

It's a major effort. Sure we'd change a few things here or there to suit our personal taste but it is GL's vision. If I were him, I present it my favourite way as well.

Wouldn't you.

that's just not an acceptable option.

what if the beatles had never released Sgt.Peppers on CD?

and then came out finnally and released it as club dance remixes. so you coukdn't the original songs as they were... just a repedative dance beat with annoying little sounds and everyone's voices pitchshifted to sound much higher to give the vague impression that a girl is singing each song.

Okay, get out your copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, read the "Don't Panic" label. Wipe the sweat from your brow with your towel.

Good, now listen up!

There IS a "Star Wars Trilogy Limited Edition" DVD box set indeed coming out December 9, 2005, in time for the Christmas season.

HOWEVER, all this is is the previously released (2004) set, minus the Bonus Disc, and with new packaging. The keepcase covers are just the poster art (just like on the discs themselves) instead of the newfangled ones. The box art is the Star Wars movie poster and the words "Limited Edition."

So unless you want less bonus content and new packaging (actually retro-packaging!), then there is no point in buying this. It's not a "double dip." BUT, due to the massive panic on the internet, and knowing most Christmas shoppers, this is probably a clever underhanded way to play off that ignorance and get people to buy it, thinking their either getting a new and improved version OR that they're getting the "original" movies (since it has the retro-posters, which old time fans will know).

And as for any rumors that this set contains fixes to the saber/color timing gaffes or the "Creative Sound Decisions" that we all griped about with the 2004 edition... this is just WISHFUL THINKING. The content is exactly the same as last year.

Also, any thought that this Limited Edition set contains the original cuts, is also WISHFUL THINKING. These are the same modified 2004 editions as before.

And finally, people have been speculating about a "Prequel Trilogy Box Set" and that Lucas would "finally replace that awful muppet Yoda in TPM with the CG Yoda" is also pure speculation at this point.

Anyone with the ROTS DVD can verify if this is true or not, but supposedly Lucas has actually replaced the muppet Yoda in TPM completely with CG Yoda, which he did as an experiment or something. But as for that then meaning he's going to re-release TPM on DVD with that change is NOT CONFIRMED BY ANY MEANS!

So for now you're going to just have to be satisfied with fan creations or old LD's if you want the old versions on a perserved format. sad.gif

Lucas's only official plans to make more changes to the OT is with the 2007ish "3-D trilogy" he's planning to launch into theaters for the 30th anniversary. And until he says otherwise I'm going to just assume these 3-D versions will be alike to the 2004 editions in terms of content.

I have to agree Barend on this one. Why can't we have the ORIGINAL, MULTI_MILLION_DOLLAR MAKING version on DVD?

And Kurgan X...did you insult the original puppet ESB? That puppet IS the Jedi Master!!
There's nothing wrong with puppets, and that was a hell of a job they did for 1980 making a believeable character out of rubber.

Some of the best video games I have played were NOT rendered 3-D, AND I OWN ALL THE MUPPET MOVIES...Why must everthing be digitized eye-candy nowadays? Does anyone care about the content anymore?

It makes me want to shoot myself out of the airlock again.

I did nothing of the kind! The Yoda muppet was had supposedly deteriorated badly since 1983 and was deemed unusable, so they created a brand new one for TPM that didn't quite look like him. That's the one I was talking about. For one scene they made a CG Yoda that walked around in a distance shot. For AOTC they constructed a completely CG Yoda, and he was apparently tweaked in ROTS so he looks pretty darn good (but not quite exactly like OT Yoda, which I never insulted!). Now obviously scenes like the duel with Dooku look much better than they would with say, a stop motion puppet (maybe?) but using the original muppet would be rather comical (shot from only the waist up? Hehe). Some people apparently really hated the TPM Yoda and are even calling for Lucas to replace Yoda throughout the trilogy with ROTS Yoda. Some speculated that Lucas would in fact do so and were pissed. Lucas apparently said he would NEVER do such a thing. Of course everyone thinks he'll do it for TPM... not that that would improve the movie any.

I don't think the muppets or puppets are bad at all, when properly composited into a scene, and often look more "real" (after all, they're a tangible physical object, not a rendered image... and as we know with video game and computer tech, they're constantly evolving... the stuff in the 1997 special editions is horrible and laughable by today's standards... but the puppetry? still quite good... look how expressive Yoda is (okay his eyes don't move around much, but otherwise pretty darn amazing). I think CG is great for certain things, like showing big crowds and for space battle type stuff. Certain things you just can't do justice (or it's prohibitively expensive) any other way. Look at how a the LOTR movies did it. Very nice blend there. Anyway, you get the picture. Simple misunderstanding on your part (I think you either missed where I said TPM not ESB or you thought they used the same muppet in Episode I as in V and VI, which they didn't)...

The thing about CG is you don't have to hire as many people, and you can control how stuff looks more (Lucas is something of a control freak after all!). You can let your imagination run wild. Without computers you have to be more creative and use more tricks to make things look right, etc, so I can see why Lucas went in this direction. He's got the money and clout to do it. And his company has pioneered a lot of things that's benefitted other movies. But then many say this has lead movies to be more focused on eye candy as a substitute for good storytelling and characterisation. I've heard people say that Jurassic Park is more "to blame" for that in the modern sense though. That really woke up all these movie companies that they could use CG and rack in the big bucks by wowing audiences with it.

PS: Somebody suggested on another forum that he would love to see the stormtroopers in the OT replaced with CG ones. Now, despite how great the ones in ROTS look, I think this is totally insane and unnecessary. I came home from the theater after seeing ROTS for the second time and popped in my (2004 super special ed edition) and watched ANH and I was struck IMMEDIATELY how much more real, sharp, and solid the troopers in ANH look than ROTS.

After watching Episode II and III you get lulled into a false sense of acceptance of CG (hard to explain). You start to just turn that part of your brain off that says "it's a video game, fake!!!" and just see it as real. You stop looking for flaws. That's fine for enjoying the movie, but when you pull back and see something "more real" (actors in plastic costumes) you realize how fake the other things looked. Somebody who has never seen the original films has "no idea" what a stormtrooper is supposed to look like. Seeing Episode II and III they get their first taste of what they are and accept it. But when you've seen the original films and you have them to compare you see the difference. The OT is the "real article" and the Prequels are the imitations.

I think his post was more rhetoric about praising how far the technology has come. What would be the point of CGizing the Troopers in OT? Would he give them silly color designs like in the prequels? Would he make them all the same height and give them Temeura Morrison voice overs to beat us over the head that they're all clones? Probably not, as he went out of his way to proclaim (still in a humorous fashion) that the clones are now of different people, not just Jango and that they've also mixed in conscripts who aren't clones and this explains the differences. But you know Lucas! heh...

I haven't seen the new movie, but I enjoyed reading the original books. Isn't it ironic that Douglas Adams himself helped make the movie (granted, he passed away before it was finished, but still)?
