So here's the deal. My sister wants an IPOD for christmas, but I know that they're pretty much overpriced MP3 players (they are, right? unsure.gif ). Can someone tell me which MP3 player we should get, because I have no idea at all.

(Money shouldn't be too much, I'm not buying it for her, my parents are)

Also, do you have to have special software to convert songs ripped from CDs to MP3 format, or are they already MP3s on the CD?

As far as I know, most CD's come write-protected now to stop that exact thing happening.

But best bet I reckon would be Winamp:

Aha, but I am one step ahead of you! Windows Media Player has an excellent rip feature, and it's never failed me once.

cdEx works wonderful. I don't have a link, so you'll have to google for it.

And for mp3 players, I have a Sandisk. It works pretty well, and it's much less expensive than an Ipod. It has radio tuner and voice recorder too. As far as I know, Ipod doesn't have those features. Not that I use them much, anyway. With mp3s loaded into the player, I don't need to listen to radio. And the voice recorder, I have some uses for it, but it depends on each person. It works with one AAA battery, though... I think Ipods don't use external batteries.

I'm with Coco. Nothing is better than CDex.

Here's a link to get it. Way better than any other ripper I've ever tried. Fast, efficient and it gives you tons of customization: http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

My sister is obsessed with getting an iPod. She was told that if she could generate 50 songs, mom would get her one. She asked me to tell her my favorite songs when she couldn't think of anymore than 17. When mom saw that there were more of mine than hers on the list, she told her she couldn't get one. My sister yelled at me for "giving her the wrong sings". Sorry, just a bit of an off topic anecdote there.

I really want anything that I can play music on other than the 15 dollar cd player I got at a garage sale.
And we want to be free to ride our machines without being hassled by the man! And we want to get loaded!

I think the iPod is very good looking and stuff, but it doesn't have anything that the others don't. Sure, not every mp3 player out there can store up to 30 GB of mp3, but does anyone really need that much? I mean, I don't even have 30 GB of mp3! (but I'm getting there).

I had an iPod mini briefly (had to sell it for rent money). The appeal of the iPod is the volume of storage. For someone who likes to carry a week's worth of music for travelling and so forth, it's a perfect idea. For someone who just wants something to listen to on the bus, something with less storage space is a little more practical.
And as far as ripping goes, if you're using Windows Media Player, the audio files are probably being ripped as WMA, not MP3. I use Winamp to rip CDs and it does a great job. However, my adoration for open source software is pushing me to try CDex.

I also have an iPod mini, and it IS great for music, but I tend to use it as a mini hard drive more than anything else. Besides, it was a gift, so I got nothing to lose. Hahaha.. wub.gif lol.

EDIT - A goft? Pfft.

Do you know if you can you use it to rip the content of a music DVD into MP3 format?

Hmmm. Not sure about that. I don't have any music DVDs to try out. (You mean DVDA, right?)
