Quite recently my laptop had been brutalized by adware and spyware. So badly that it was constantly crashing, and somehow getting past my blockers. I have, for the most part fixed that problem. In a few days my stepsister is getting me a copy of Norton Antivirus 2006, so I think I will be set there. Now, my screen is on the fritz. About half or 3/4 of my screen no longer works. It is almost like inverting the colors, except worse. It is an LCD screen, and I thought that they only got that way if you hit them or pressed the screen. Maybve the damn thing is just dying on me. Luckily my videocard can support a moniter as well (dual screen sweet!). Unfortunately The extra moniter that I have come across isn't all that great. I have done a little playing around with the settings, but with no luck. I can't figure out why the screen is dying on me. I could really use help with this.

I have also come across a computer (for free) with everything besides the moniter. It is also probably completely unusable because a virus has just about completely obliterated it. I was wondering if any of the drives might be salvageable. I also know that the memory and perhaps other items can be erased with magnetic wiping. I was wondering what ones those could possibly be if any. It has all of the usuals and a DVD drive. I might even has to get a hold of some diagnostic equipment. With this computer, and another very old one that I own, I may even be able to build up a comupter that works fairly well. This would be great, especially if my laptop goes and dies on me. At the very least, I got free memory and a free pretty decent hard drive.

Any help on both matters would be greatly appreciated.
Apparently writing about JM here is his secret weakness. Muwahaha!!!! Now I have leverage over him and am another step closer towards my goal of world domination.

"And the Evil that was vanquished shall rise anew. Wrapped in the guise of man shall he walk amongst the innocent and Terror shall consume they that dwell upon the Earth. The skies will rain fire. The seas shall become as blood. The righteous shall fall before the wicked! And all creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell!" - Mephisto

Kurgan X showed me this web comic done with Legos. It pokes fun at all six Star Wars films and I found it to be extremely entertaining.

First thing: If you use a magnet to wipe a hard drive, it has to be hella powerful. Electro-magnet powerful. And as far as I know, it renders it completely unusable, so don't go there.
If the computer was screwed over by a virus, and format should fix it. I don't think a virus can render a computer completely destroyed. If that were the case, people would be replacing computers a lot more often, I'm sure. So if it's free, there's no harm in giving the used system a go. You can get a used 17" CRT monitor for, like, $20 these days.
As far as your laptop, it sounds like the LCD is shot. If it's under any sort of warranty, just contact the manufacturer. If not, you may be in for a pretty penny to get it fixed. I think this is one of those cases where it's not even worth getting the screen fixed. By the time you do that, you'll be most of the way towards the money for a whole new laptop.
However, you may want to try simply checking to ensure that the video card is securely installed. Who knows? Maybe it's just been wiggled loose or something.
