Mmmmmm, two of the most powerful countries in the world decide to become pretty much allied with either other. I think if I were in the most powerful country in the world (not Cuba, I'm talking about USA) I would probably be getting ready to shit myself.

Countrys ally all the time... And given the sizes of the US, Russia, and China, and the values held in each, any sort of invasion would be sheer absurdity, given mass culture and technology. The only plausible warfare between superpowers (beside Cold War-esque vicarious skirmishes) is nuclear, and I don't think any of the three countries is willing to risk the loss of capital that would result of engaging in it. It's just bad for business.
Of course, I don't see "Two countries ally. This equals them teaming up to attack another country." in the context of general peacetime betwixt the world powers. Everybody's all grumbly at the US for being pushy and imperialistic, but it's "terrorism" that is the enemy, not communism, so they really shouldn't be worried.

Lecter: If the recent events in Iraq have showed us anything, it's that idiots can blatently lie about national foreign policy and no one will care. And that people don't tolerate subjugation well anymore unless it's willing (like opiate for the masses).

I remember pre WWII major strategic policy in America was that since the battleship limitations gave five-for-five between USA and Britain and five-for-three USA and Japan a great deal of serious military minds were preparing for 'Britain and Japan out gunning America across two oceans'
