Tough choice between the FFs and KOTOR. I chose the FF in the end.

Fallout, Baldur's gate, Ultima, Phantasy star, Skies of Arcadia, Elder Scrolls series?

Off the top of my head that's a whole bunch you've missed (and probably not played) not to mention games that blur the line like System shock or Shining force.

To add to Laughlyn's list, Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, Lionheart, Temple of Elemental Evil and the allmighty Planescape: Torment.

Of the choices you gave, KotOR is far superior(of the ones I've played, anyway).

Ultima VI was a very important part of my upbringing... probably one of the first RPG I played.
I'd try installing it in WinXP, but it probably won't work.

If we're considering games that blur the line, then my favorite's Deus Ex.

*quick test*

*look of amazement*

It does work, although getting sound is a problem. Ultima 6 is definately the best in the series (stable, solid gameplay, loads of stuff to do).

Hmm... the chance of finding an Ultima game in the store is slim, anyone know where I can - erm, get a perfectly legal version? *wink, wink*

I'm going to try it tomorrow. I have that Ultima Collection cd that packs every game from the beginning until Pagan, so maybe I can get more than one working. It will be great to play those games and actually understand what people say to me this time around!

Why is it always so fucking difficult to get sound working in older games in WinXP?

Apparently on DOS you had to format the sound for every game you played, so that might have something to do with the older ones, but I don't know about Windows.
