So now that Pierce is out, the runner ups to replace him are Clive Owen, Eric Bana, Gerard Butler and Ioan Gruffud.

Hugh Jackman was reportedly in talks but recently said that Bond is a no go for him.

Is there really any point in continuing the franchise? Besides making money I mean.

After doing the Star Wars prequels and the Island you'd think he'd be tired of franchise type films. Plus at 5'10 1/2" he'd be the shortest Bond ever, as would be the case with Ioan Gruffud, who's only like 5'11".

Eric Bana has the size for Bond (6'3" and strudily built) and he's displayed a knack for wry humor, but after starring duds like "Hulk" and "Troy" getting the audience to really accept him as an action hero could be tricky, though my remedy for that would be to watch him in "Black Hawk Down".

Meanwhile Clive Owen also has the size (6'2" and stocky) plus he has this metallic brooding quality to him reminiscent of Timothy Dalton, but like Bana getting the audience to see him as a man of action could be hard, especially when the only big action film role he has under his belt is "King Arthur" (though that film had problems that went way beyond just him) and then there's the smaller role in "The Bourney Identity". And then there's the dispute about whether or not he's genuinely interested in taking the job.

The last 3 films were so terrible that that making more would seem pointless. But then again, look at the last few Moore films in the 80's. They f'in sucked. But many years later GOLDEN EYE came to be. Which rocked.

Were the Timothy Dalton Bond films no good in your eyes?

Yeah, the Moore films weren't that good - hindered possibly by the fact that his age was showing through and the fact that it was clearly stunt doubles in a lot of shots (I think this is most noticeable in Octopussy, though I kinda had a soft spot for that one).

Funny thing, and I'm sure Madam Corvex would appreciate this, Sean Bean actually auditioned for the role of Bond in The Living Daylights but was rejected in favor of Timothy Dalton. Then a few years later Sean Bean played the nemesis to Pierce Brosnan's Bond in GoldenEye, which, lets face it, was easily the best of the Brosnan Bonds.

I think Dalton was a pretty good Bond. He captured the darker quality found in Fleming's novels, though he got the crappier movies. And plus he was hella wicked riding that cello case down that mountain.

George Lazenby was my second favorite Bond. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was just so hardcore. And Telly Savalas? Who can beat that? I would say he was my first favorite Bond, but I'd probably be crucified.

I didn't buy Lazenby; he wasn't much of an actor, and the comical plot about Bond bedding three babes in the one night wasn't even funny; just a big old waste of time. I do like a lot of stuff in OHMSS, but for me it's still GOLDFINGER.

Dalton looks great, but yeah, those movies weren't very good.

The bond movies in general could stand some degree of seriousness, and frankly they shouldn't always be abut plots to take over and/or destroy entires countries and/or the world. Like, come on. The BOURNE movies so far have taken over the spy thing altogether, and for dumb action there is a lot of competition now. BOND if left unchanged is redundant.

I had this idea that Dustin Hoffman could play a great Bond, with Ann Bancroft as Miss Moneypenny. Then I learned that Bancroft died this year. That made the joke less funny. sad.gif

Anne Bancroft died June 6th, 2005 of uterine cancer.

In other news, I hear that 37 year old Daniel Craig has been chosen to play Bond in the 2006 release "Casino Royal".
