Man dies after 50 hours of computer games

South Korean left seat in Internet cafe only to use toilet, take brief naps

SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing online battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play online games on Aug. 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.

South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

The way I hear it, the national sport of Korea is either StarCraft or soccer. They also do a lot of 'game things selling for real money' - run macro lines, control key areas in some MMORPGs, and occasionally call on the mob to find people who defeat their characters in ladder tournaments.
But this is too far.
"Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games"
Sheesh... and when the Nightlifers are saying you are spending too much time on a computer, you know you really should cut back.

Of causes of death people are happy to have - two of "passing away in sleep after long life, of sound mind and sound body", "passing away from exhaustion-related heart failure while making love" and "passing away from exhaustion-related heart failure from playing games too much" get in there. Guess which?

"passing away in sleep after long life, of sound mind and sound body" that one is so not on my list. smile.gif

Back to that, it's exactly why I can't stand most MMORPG players and games, they're super addictive and steal people with their economy, item hunts, moneylings and PvP control areas. That's why I like games like City of Heroes, designed for you to pop in with some friends (or find some which isn't nearly as fun), kick ass, and go back to whatever you were doing after the villains lie broken and bleeding on the floor.

Anyway, back to topic. Game addiction is much like drug addiction, you get withdrawal effects and just need another fix to feel happy. Be it new boots or whatever. I'll have none of their narcotic gaming schemes!

He lived the dream and paid for it with his life. He shall be remembered as a hero to all gamers... or something.

No wonder Asian kids are impossible to beat in online games. It's like a way of life over there!

They are the kings of Warcraft and Starcraft. I recall playing Battle net many years back.

You would here things like "he must be azn" and "azn's are 1337 pwnage"

"What Hochi? You were beaten at WarCraft by a white person?"
"Yes sensei!"
"Of all these years in my house, I've put my blood and sweat into teaching you, yet you learn nothing. I have failed you and must commit seppuku!"
*Commits Seppuku*
"Sensei! Nooooo!!! I slew him with my horrible WarCraft skills and dishonoured my clan. I must follow his path."
*Commits Seppuku*

I've read somewhere that the game the guy was playing was Starcraft (may be wrong though, the source was not very trustable (I think the word "trustable" doesn't exists, but what the hell)).
... come on, I know Starcraft is a great game, but if your going to play something to death, then choose a newer game!

'twas starcraft. A newer game you could desire, but both Warcraft III and Starcraft are still the pinacle of multiplayer RTS tournaments.

Anybody see the movie Leaving Las Vegas? They should make a version of that movie called Leaving Starcraft with this Korean dude playing Nicholas' Cages character, only he kills himself with video games rather than booze. That's oscar material right there. Yeah, this post is pretty random.

Man, that's a great idea! It can be a good movie!

They should hire a big star like Robert De Niro for the main role... Wait a second, that just seems plain wrong.

Point 1: Age does not ruin a game!

Point 2: Don't show this to people's parents or senators.

Point 3: Coco: The word is "reliable."
