Apparently, deep space construction technology advances significantly during the Imperial period of galactic history. We see the Death Star in its early stages of construction in the final moments of ROTS, and it is declared operational in ANH. Given a guess that Luke is about 20 in ANH, it took over 20 years to build the first Death Star. However, the second Death Star (which was supposedly significantly times larger than the original) was already about 60-75% complete in the 4-5 years that elapsed between ANH and ROTJ.

I suppose the Empire actually started building the second one a few years after the first. Maybe the original plan was to have a fleet of these things cruising around the galaxy, blasting naughty planets into oblivion... dry.gif

Like a huge Newton's cradle, I'm sure.

I'm at the point of accepting multiple DS' going on at the same time. It still doesn't bother me as much as Senator JJ.

But if both constructions were going on at the same time, how come the plans were different? The rebels should have been able to destroy both Death Stars with only one set of plans. Also, for how many years did the Rebels have the plans to the Death Star and why the hell did they wait till it was capable of destroying a planet before going after it? Lucas lacks the ogiginality that he once had. We know that the Empire is going to build a Death Star so why rub our faces in it? Because Lucas is a moron.
It seems like everyone is over the nitpicking. Too bad.

Sorry to write again but heres an excerpt from the opening scroll of ROTJ: "Little does Luke know that the GALACTIC EMPIRE
has secretly BEGUN construction on a new armored space station even
more powerful than the first dreaded Death Star."

Im pretty sure BEGUN means that the Empire didnt start twenty years earlier or even 5-10 years earlier.

After Lucas has dried his hands and wiped his mouth with the OT script,
there's not a whole lot of guidelines to follow.

Be pissed because of this inconsistancy and Not that one. Fine.
Personally, I'm turning towards the "could not care less side."

after reading that DS2 was in the rots script final scene, I was just trying to be conversational. Beware, however. The tighter you grip at contradictions, the more plot elements slip through your fingers.

The one flaw in DS 1 as you know after watching is the exhaust port that Luke fires the Proton torpedo into to blow it up.

DS 2 is bigger than DS1, depending on your source, twice as big because the exhaust vents (necessary when the weapon is discharged, a buildup of those exhaust fumes would bring about many a Wilhelm scream and no need for the Rebellion to blow it up as it would blow up itself after the first firing) perforated across the surface so the exhaust isn't concentrated in a vent big enough for a Proton torpedo to fit through. The Empire learned from its mistake. My source is one of the SW technical guides I glanced at once.

DS 2 seemes to me to be built as the ultimate bait. The Rebels MUST destroy it because if its built, there's little hope to defeat the Empire. As bait, its big enough for the weapon to fire and take out Rebel Cruisers, a long way from blowing planets up.

I wonder if the bug creatures from ATOC were around to build DS2, if so, it would be easier to wipe out that planet and ensure no new DS construction. Lucas added those creatures because of the commentary in Clerks by Randall about the Rebellion killing a bunch of innocent Union workers in Jedi. He mentions this in the ATOC commentary. I don't know how this makes it easier to accept, a sentient being is a sentient being. I find the bugs creating the DS as ridiculous as anything else coming out of the PT.

i hate to use the EU as support, but in the game star wars galaxies, the DS 2 is under construction immediatly after the destruction of the first.

and i always thought the clerks complaint was lame since certainly most construction would be done by droids...

hoberman sphere

this is the way they ought to mass produce the DS'. the little wadded up pic is the structure which unfolds to create the sphere. Not that the bug people need my input or anything.

well heres a wild speculation, maybe the senate was contesting the construction of the DS 1. and it was allowed to become fully operational only after the senate was dissolved.
