Very true.
And Jerfus where did you get that original treatment for the prequels info from. Sounds intriguing.

Eh, what?
I don't follow...

Don't see how this is a plothole at considering how much of what Kenobi told Luke about his fathers past in ANH was later revealed to be completely untrue.
As someone on another board said, I don't see how Anakin's
"Heres my lightsabre Obi-Wan. I'm going to the dark side now."
was ever going to work that well.
Very true.

I'm sure Lucas has pretty much destroyed any references to it by now so it will look like he had all the prequel crap we saw on screen planned from the start, but I actually read a treatment of it a long time ago when I was about 11 or 12 years old. This was back around 1984 or so. I'm sure I read part of it from an article in a Star Wars Insider magazine, but most of it was definetly from a book on Star Wars whose name has been lost to me with time unfortunately sad.gif

It was great stuff though, no silly battle droids or Trade Federation non-sense, NO GUNGANS, NO NABOO, NO GENOSIAN BUG-BOYS, NO MUSTAFAR ... you can imagine my shock when I saw the prequels. Here is a little of what I recall from the old storyline -

Sorry up front for the long post smile.gif

I remember it talking about the Clone Wars. The Clones in this story were Mandalorian Warriors (where Boba Fett got his armor) that had begun raiding outer-rim worlds. The Jedi were sent to fight them off and soon discovered they were cloning their soldiers, the technology had been outlawed by the Republic decades before the outbreak of the war. Though the Jedi were eventually victorious, they suffered severe losses and trust in them and the Republic was at an all time low due to the destruction from the Clone Wars. This gave a young Senator Palpatine the ability to turn the people against the Jedi and the politicians against themselves - corroding the government from the inside out and allowing him to slowly take control. With the Jedi's numbers already down and the galaxy's new found mistrust of them, it was easy for Vader to finish them off with ease.

It talked about how Obi-wan befriended Anakin Skywalker - who was a starfighter pilot ace in the Clone Wars and was the same age as Obi-wan. Anakin was also friends with pilot ace Bail Organa (also about the same age). Obi-wan felt Anakin's potential in the Force and began training him as a Jedi. He later met Amidala (different name, but can't remember it) who wasn't a senator. I think she was from Alderaan originally, and had close ties with the Organa family - who was royalty. (Leia was a PRINCESS because her adopted family, the Organas, were Alderaanian royalty, NOT cuase here mother was a 14-year old elected queen of Gungan land).

There was never much mention of Yoda, other than he was a peaceful, reclusive teacher, even in his hay-day, and never weilded a lightsaber. HE WASN'T the bouncing, back-flipping, Spider-man on crack, ball of green CGI goop that we were force-fed in Ep2 and 3.

And the part I remember best was that while fighting alongside Anakin against the Mandalorians, Obi-wan noticed his student using increasingly aggressive techniques and force powers that Obi-wan had not taught him. Anakin was later led to believe by Palpatine (who was secretly instructing him in the dark arts behind Obi-wan's back for several years) that Kenobi and (the now) Amidala were having an affair. In his rage, Anakin killed several Jedi, then fled to Yavin 4 to hide from the Republic and await Kenobi's imminent arrival.
Obi-wan tracks Anakin to Yavin NOT to kill him, but to try and bring him back from the Darkside. Anakin accuses Obi-wan of the affair with Amidala, which Obi-wan denies and asks who has put these thoughts in his mind. Anakin attacks, but Obi-wan only parries the blows, not striking back at his friend. Finally, as Anakin's attacks escalate, Obi-wan is forced to fight back. There duel leads them to the edge of an active volcano, where some of the rocks give way and Anakin begins to fall into the caldera far below. I remember distinctly it saying Obi-wan lept to the edge and grabs Anakin by the sleeve stoping his fall and shouting "GIVE ME YOUR OTHER HAND ANAKIN! PLEASE! DON'T DO THIS, YOU CAN STILL BE SAVED, JUST GIVE ME YOUR OTHER HAND!" For a moment, Anakin looks into Obi-wan's face and we see the good man he once was return. He begins to lift his other hand to give to Obi-wan, but suddenly notices Obi-wan's saber off to the side of the cliff. The anger returns to his face as Anakin pulls the lightsaber to him, and lashes out at Kenobi. Obi-wan is forced to release his grip on Anakin in order to dodge the blow. Then it talked about focusing on Anakin's face as he fell, glaring in anger at Obi-wan until he disappeared into the smoke and fire below. Believing his friend is surely dead, Obi-wan returns to tell Amidala and the other Jedi of his failure to bring Anakin back from the Darkside. Months later, in his grief and guilt for the loss of his student and friend, Obi-wan goes into exhile on Tattooine as Darth Vader appears and begins killing off the remaining Jedi, but not before dropping the new-born Luke off at the Lars homestead. Amidala flees to Alderaan with Leia, where she dies when Leia is about 4 years old. The Organa family adpots her.

And that is all I can remember, but I'm sure there were many more stories I can't recall. Sorry for the LONG-ASS post everyone, but hope it gives people some insight on the original storyline of Anakin and the Clone Wars. If anyone out there remembers what the book(s) was called that contained the stuff I wrote above please let me know (if Lucas hasn't burned them all by now) Good night all - sleeping.gif

This was an excellent post, and I would have like to see the movie or movies outlined.

I have a few minor quibbles with the synopsis. Most of all, with the name "Mandalorians", which is gay. The synopsis is not quite substantial enough for three movies. Amidala's character needs fleshing out, as does the exact role of Bail Organa, and why people would even start listening to Palpatine. There probably should be a few plot twists within that framework.

Still, even as is this would make for much better movies than the confused mess that is the basic plot of the prequels.

I always had the conceit that pre-Vader Anakin was genuinely a "good man" and actually went over the the Dark Side for either idealistic reasons or because he had little choice. To make this work, Palpatine can't be 100% pure evil (he never would have been able to keep the empire as a going concern for decades if he was, since pure evil is not consistent with the kind of administrative stability the empire would have needed). Lucas seems at times to view the light side and the dark side as something like yin and yang, different but complementary, and at other times seems to take the a manichaean view that the dark side was just evil and had to be defeated. He should have settled on one or the other persepective.

Del Rey's Annotated screenplays contains numerous insights from genuine drafts along with quotes from the creators. You can also find rough drafts of the original screenplay all over the place, like here for instance:

"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

"Most of all, with the name 'Mandalorians', which is gay."

I wasn't aware that names had a sexual orientation. Well, "Paul Lynde", maybe, but that's it.

(Yes, I know what you mean. I don't have to like it, though.)
