Unfortunately, in higher education, they don't really give a damn why you were absent, they treat you like an adult. At the university I go to, if you're absent from a seminar for more than 3 occasions (either if you fell into a coma or just couldn't be bothered to attend class), you may not get a grade.

One reason to take courses offline:
The grade don't get judged on my attendance but only by the performance and workings of my work.

What has my attendance or how many times I attend the same place got to do with the outcome of my work? The same place does not always hold all the answers.

Now call me obsessive...

Treating you like an adult?

I thought it was the responsibility of the adults to pick and choose what they need to study and do according to what the syllabus states in order to take the exam, thus non teacher driven.

To me if someone is ill and the guide blaming them or bringing down their grade for illnesses beyond their control sounds selfish and irrational to implicate that if it did not affect or had anything to do with their resulting performance.

I see it is like exaggeration or even blackmail in that, if you don't attend you loose points as if the attendance was more important than anything else to pass. I think I am out of touch here as I am not in that environment but do state if I got it wrong.

Yup. Last March their were people at my school going to class with mono, because they couldn't afford an absense from a college class. Not to mention the other cases of various other communicable diseases, concussions, the like. It's a stupid rule, but it probably won't be changed until an entire class dies because someone went to school with the black death.
"YOU'RE MISSING A PERIOD. YOU THINK IT'S FUNNY, DON'T YOU? YOU THINK IT'S FUNNY THAT YOU FUCK WITH GRAMMAR? WELL, FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR MISSING PERIOD! I HOPE IT MEANS YOUR SLUTTY, NON-PUNCTUATED WAYS HAVE GOTTEN YOU TEEN-PREGNANT!"

Well, that's not really how it is at my university; it's pretty sympathetic for the most part. Most of the professors are understanding, especially if you've given them no reason to not trust you, which I haven't. All of my other teachers are doing what they can to help me out through this, though I'm going to do my best not to take advantage of that; but this one teacher is just a freaking grad student that thinks she knows everything, and she was just being downright mean to me about this in the first place, like I was lying to her or trying to get out of work or something. Me, who has made A's on every project so far, and finished them long before anyone else/the due date, and probably does twice as much work than half the people in the class.

My piano teacher gave me the name of who I need to go to in case she gives me too much trouble, so I will have at least a bit of help. I mean, you can't get fired for being sick as long as you have a doctor saying "don't go to work for x amount of time" so why should my grades suffer? I mean, sure, if you have a cold, go to class; but I'm getting a needle stuck in my freaking throat to test for freaking cancer. Gimme a break, here! pinch.gif

*end rant*

Sorry...
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

I never said I agreed with this system. However, I forgot to mention that this only applies for seminars, where attendance is indeed necessary in order not to fall behind. To take my example: it's like if one ditches two Kanbun classes in a row (basically about reading old Chinese texts to which some Japanese markings have been added), they'll never know how to read the Kanbun texts. If we ditch one class too many, we are not allowed to get a mark from the subject. Period. But DOWNGRADING the mark for just not being there, ignoring the fact that the person in question worked his/her ass off with it, that's just fucking disgusting. It's not common practice here, and anyway, most teachers bridge this problem by giving the person shitloads of extra assignments. If they manage to complete it, they are eligible to take the exam, and this I find a correct procedure. It's usually the young, new, Mr/Ms Know-It-All smartass teachers who fill the role of the malignant assholes whom students literally wish death upon. I'm fucking serious. mellow.gif
At lectures though, the professors don't give a shit if you're not there, IF you read the stuff you're supposed to read and learn the stuff you're supposed to learn.

Where I come from, most adults understand that sometimes other adults get sick and need to get treated and also understand that the world doesn't revolve around their job/class.

All I've gotta do is call the guys at the company and the university, say that I'm sick, work my arse off and pass the exams at some point in time. Yey.

If it's a ligitimate illness, which this is, surely a doctor's note would suffice to convince them to work out an alternative. If not, isn't there a student union of some sort to complain to? You're paying them for an education. If you suffer an illness, you're still paying for an education, and they should then try to accomodate that.

Not in my case, as my education is supported by the state. If you get a very good score at the entrance exam, then you get to study for free, and acquire your first degree for free. However, it's going to change. sad.gif And no, Japanese people (and those smartass teacher's assistants) apparently don't give a shit why you are absent from class.

Complaint: I have a cyst on my thyroid that I have to get biopsied to check if it's malignant, and what to do with it whether it is or not.

That means I don't have to get the nuclear medicine test after all, but instead, I get a really thick long needle stuck in my THROAT. BLECH. I don't mind needles except THAT does not sound fun at all.

And I have a bitch teacher for my most hated class (printmaking) that said "I don't care if you went to the doctor, an absence is an absence, and I'll count you as absent. (((2 absences mean a full letter grade down on my final grade.))) Also, if you fall behind, you're fucked! *evil laughter*" Okay, maybe I paraphrased after the first sentence.

Csyts suck, but I'm sure there a hell of a lot better than getting cancer. My experience with cysts consists of:
1. Getting one right on the nerve cluster at the end of my tail bone.
Procedure- cut open with a razorblade and drain, get sewn up (with a complimentary hole for icky stuff to drain), then take antibiotics.
Question: Do I get any kind of painkillers Answer: no Response Question: This is going to hurt really really bad isn't it? Answer: Yup
2. Having the same one come back, and with a vengence.
Procedure- same as above, except this time we're going to make the drain hole bigger, and we also need to tear/cut out ingrown hair. We're also going to still charge you, even though this was technically our screw up.
Question: Do I get any kind of painkillers this time Answer: no Response Question: This is going to hurt even more than last time because of the hair, right? Answer: Yup Response: I hate you.
3. There is a hardened csyt on my neck. As to what to have done about it, there were some options. If it gets worse, remove it now. If it gets better (which it hasn't for several years now) don't worry. If it stays the same, have it taken care of when you haev the money to afford the procedure (hasn't happened yet).

My professors all reserve the right to withdraw someone from their class for whatever number of times missed. However, they are all more than reasonable with students about this, and are usually quite lenient about it.

Complaint: All in all my midterms went fairly well (Western civ. III was a breeze, the only requirement for at least a B- was that you paid attention in class). That is except for Intro to Philosophy, where I'm sure that I did rather poorly on it. I'll find out later today.
Apparently writing about JM here is his secret weakness. Muwahaha!!!! Now I have leverage over him and am another step closer towards my goal of world domination.

Ew... Z, that doesn't sound like fun at all. Especially since my cyst, to remove, they'd have to cut through my throat - they better give me some frakkin' painkillers! Glad yours weren't cancerous. I dunno yet if mine is, but my doctor really likes the phrase, "you're in the age group most likely for it to be cancerous." However, in reality, the chances of it being malignant are pretty small...

I'm wondering how that in-grown hair gave you another cyst??

It gives the bacteria and other garbage that's supposed to drain out something to latch onto. Apparently the surgeon failed to mention this the first time. It happened because he didn't do a good job the first time. The second time he did a very good job.

So active and well until I ate the eclair from out of the box and a piece of cake earlier. When I look at the ingredients no wonder why I am feeling so lethargic to move. I just keep on breaking a promise that I'll never never eat another eclair or cake from that supermarket. People buy them for me as they are sometimes reduced in price but it also reduces my health of state and mind.
