QUOTE (Laughlyn @ Feb 2 2006, 01:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'd never lost anything from a reboot on fat-32, now with this wonderful new file structure whenever XP crashes for unknown reasons any file being accessed by any open program is at risk.

Same goes for any other file system, I'm afraid. Access a file always equals in taking a risk. However, NTFS supports journaling, thus making the recovery of crashed-data more likely, if possible. Apart from that, it might not be a logical error, but a physical on - and there's not much that any file system could do against that except for ignoring the messed up parts in the future.

At best, ye olde scandisk converted a bunch of stuff into .chk files, and the only things that cropped up as corrupt\damaged were tmp and swp files. Yes, there was the risk of you losing something, normally what you hadn't saved in the last 2 hours. What hacks me off about XP + NTFS is that it can (and will) fuck up files not actively in use. I could accept it if the shutdown occured during saving\loading, but not when it's my copy of paintshop that's been sitting in the background for the last hour.

I do not remember losing any file on a Fat 32 file system formatted as 32k clusters, unless the drives had bad sectors or damaged circuit boards.

The problems with Ntfs could also be with compression on the small cluster sizes. One of my guesses to compression which I am still questioning: Could parts of files share the same clusters, as linked to certain parts of other clusters that matched? Simply put could other files be affected if shared under the same space.

For rebooting and stopping, I have less problems on loosing files now after my experiments. I allocated a small partition for the boot loader, and formatted the other partition as Ntfs 64 K clusters which appears to run smoothly for certain tasks.

Did you find the cause of the shutdown yet?

One of my suitemates is addicted to aerosol "de"oderizers, so every time she goes to the bathroom she empties an entire can into the air. I don't know which is worse, gagging and dry-heaving from the noxious crap smell, or choking to death from the overwhelming, sinus-burning, cinnamon-potpourri death that hangs in the air for three hours and seeps under the door so I can't even escape the smell in my room.

No, wait, the worst is when the two smells combine. sick.gif

Complaint. My mac just shut down the email program and Photoshop right after I sent an email.

restarted, back to work. NOTE: when you write a photoshop action, quit photoshop and open again. OTherwise if pshop crashes you lose your script.

Complaint: Due to excessive workload and the pressure of having five minutes to submit something electronically, when I got a question wrong on my homework I burst into tears and swore to disembowel my teacher with a spoon.

I'm beginning to suspect I'm not getting enough sleep.

I got back to my dorm room a few minutes ago and found out the deadbolt on my bathroom door was unlocked and stuff was moved. Someone was in here, in my room, while I was gone! My private space! MINE! yell.gif

If that happened to me, I will get the trip wire ready for next time and possibly a hidden camera in place, just to jog their memory.
