Okay, here we go..onto the confusing politics that is George Lucas..
Now, Darth Sidious is the Emperor of his Empire...right?Okay
Govenor Tarkin is the regional govenor over what I am assuming his region to be the Death Star, an armored space station with enough...oh sorry..
Okay, so whats Darth Vader? I know he's a Darth...? What the hell does that mean?
They call him Lord, so he's the Lord of what? Does he have a military rank of general, because I never hear the word general asscoiated with him... Maybe he's the vice-Emperor....So when He kill Sidious he will become Emperor...that makes sens, but what does he do as vice-Emperor..?

Does he have an office... I am assuming his little ball he takes his helmet off in to be his office I guess...?
What authority has he?

All questions not answered, hmmmm....
Maybe he's like Bill Clinton, he aint president, he has no power, but people love him and he can tell them what to do and they shall follow....

Vader is the Emperor's apprentice, and thus his right-hand man. Consider him the "enforcer of the Emperor's will" - basically he is seen as the one that carries out the wishes of the Emperor, and the officers therefore follow his commands.

However, the fact that he is outranked by Tarkin still puzzles me to this day. I imagine the Emperor communicated his demands of Vader through Tarkin...

Vader watches everyone else to make sure they are living up to the Emporer's standards. He still has to follow orders, but only if they are in parallel to what the Emporer wants for his Empire.

Interesting question. I have wondered about Darth Vader's rank myself. In ESB and RotJ, it seemed he was the Emperor's right hand man, perhaps as highly ranked as being overrruled only by the Emperor himself. However, Governor Tarkin seemed to be calling the shots in SW. However, it could seem that Tarkin was doing more of a mediator's role in SW - When Vader starts strangling the guy in the Imperial conference, as though Tarkin were the more reasonable of the power triad of Emperor, Vader and Tarkin.

On the other hand, Leia does make a cutting remark about Tarkin "Holding Vader's leash." Does she mean that the Emperor overrode Vader's authority in favor of Tarkin, who might have been trying to score points and become the Emperor's heir, or was she was inferring that Tarkin was nothing more than a pit bull handler, thus insulting both of them?

Same thing as the vice-president. Get carted away to undisclosed location because of heart problems.

Remember, "Darth" is NOT a title. Until the PT, "Darth Vader" was always his name. "Lord Vader" was his title, though lord of what, I have no clue. The whole "Lord of The Sith" thing I don't believe was ever mentioned in the OT...hell, I don't think "Sith" was brought up at all.

The way it seemed to me is that in ANH Vader is the Empire's ultimate enforcer. He doesn't have a rank per se...he just goes where he's ordered/needed and lays down the law.

Than he'd be better served in the PT, which has problems of no heart whatsoever. smile.gif

edit: 1977 bubble gum card has Vader titled "Lord of the Sith".

Well, according to military protocol, the commanding officer of a ship/locale calls the shots, unless a visitor has the capability to rescind that authority, which is usually not done out of courtesy. I am thinking that possibly Vader and Tarkin are more or less of equal rank, so when Tarkin says "Vader, release him," Vader does it mainly out of respect, since Tarkin holds authority over the Death Star--even though Vader is the Emperor's right-hand man.

There is also the possibility that Vader and his Stormtroopers are considered something of a "special forces detachment." That is, he's sort of like Master Chief in Halo--assigned certain missions and attached to the forces carrying out that mission. In this case his rank is considered subordinate to whomever he is attached, yet he is also the Emperor's eyes and ears in whatever business he's seeing to.

I think, though, that he exists outside of the usual rank structure, sort of like the leaders of the Nazi Party, while wearing military uniforms and having military ranks, were really not subject to the same ruiles as everyone else--after all, in the formal structure Hitler had just been a corporal in the army, yet promoted himself to commander in chief.

I believe that in Ep IV the book, Darth Vader is known as "Evil Lord of the Sith." The book did not go into what a Sith was though. As for the name "Darth," I heard years ago that Darth Vader's name is actually Dutch for "Dark Father." Darth = Dark, Vader = Father. So whenever we hear the term Darth, it means Dark. Makes you think then, so why did Lucas even incorporate another language of Earth into the Star Wars universe? unsure.gif
