Well, I've decided that the time is ripe to break every oath I swore over my brothers Dreamcast, and splash out on that console that all the good games seem to be migrating to. Now I know fuck all about Playstations (apart from "Sony" and "has Sans Andreas"), so can anyone suggest what my mearge budget should be looking for?

And on another quick note. my brothers Xbox refuses to be a DVD player without the DVD bits. Do I need to scoop some DVD remotey loveliness for my PS2 before I can use that side of it?

EDIT: Once again, seconds after I hit reply, the answer to a problem (the remote one) is answered. But is it worth getting a remote anyway?

Well, when me and my friend tried to watch a movie with a controller, it was pretty cumbersome. But if you can remember what the buttons do, it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as games, I don't know much, other than the first few Spyro games were fun.

I heard that Winning 11 8 is really good, if you're in to soccer.

Beware of Floppy. Spyro is not fun. That is a blatant lie.

I don't know much about PS2 games, but it is backwards compatible, so I'll reccomend some PSX games. Look for Metal Gear Solid(and it's sequal), Medievil, Tomba(and it's sequal) and thats pretty much it. As far as consoles go, the playstation line doesn't have much that I can reccomend.

Metal Gear Solid 3. (Sime already mentioned the other titles, so... I don't wanna repeat those ones. lol)

XMen Legends (I really liked this beat-em-up).

and... you should really look into the Silent Hill series.

The best/Cheapest PS2 games that I have seen are:

Parappa the Rapper (1&2) You should be able to get these for about $5 each

LOTR: Return of the King - I got mine for $17 used (a guilty pleasure)

Oni - My sister picked this one up, and she likes it a lot. She got it for $12 used. Handles kind of like one of the Jedi games one stick controls direction, the other motion. Kinda complicated for me, but fun, once you get the hang of it.

Crash Badicoot - pretty much any of them, most are ps1, but you can get them cheap.

Resident Evil - My brother loves this series, and it seems like the games are lots of scary fun (though he says the Gamecube versions are better)

If you are going to splurge, I think the Lego Star Wars looks like fun, but that one is new, so you are looking at about $50.

DBZ Budokai - If you like DBZ, you can get 1 & 2 for cheap ($5 and maybe $15 respectively)

Good Luck!

Caution young chyld, the oath of the dreamcast is not so easily broken, soon hedgehog assassins shall kill everyone you know and love.

While you're waiting for that to happen, you could track down a copy of Gitaroo man, another one of those dodgy parappa style games but with more eastern wierdness than you can shake a kitten at.

Hey, we have a new member. Hat taken off and greetings of the like to you.

Not so new, but welcome anyways.

The GC Resident Evil Remake and RE4 are amazing. RE0 was sort of okay.

LOTR was one really hard game. Both me and my friend couldn't get past the firrst level on co-op.

And don't listen to Sime, Spyro is the coolest dragon around (besides Trogdor)

I recommend (from the games I tried):

Winning Eleven 8
Final Fantasy X
San Andreas, of course
Call of Duty
X-Men Legends is rather good

mmh I'll write more as soon as I remember other games that I played.

Don't forget Bloody Roar, if you like punching and kicking animal-people. And maybe the old Tomb Raiders (but not so much the newer one), if you like getting stuck in places for hours on end, and finally finding a code to blow yourself up, just to be released from your misery...

Laughlyn and floppydisk, thanks for the welcome.

floppydisk, about LOTR, seriously....? Even in co-op? That game is my bread. And Trogdor is the best, isn't he? wub.gif

Well if we can stick PS1 games in here. Persona 2:Eternal punishment. I stubbornly refuse to stop bringing up this game until someone else plays it and appreciates it.

That's odd, I've battered my way through LOTR on Xbox several times now. Its not immensly easy, but then nothign should be.

And thanks for all the hinty goodness, kids. I've already splashed out on a console, coming with GTA 3 and Vice City, and some rally game. Given a bit of work, I can start knabbing other games in short order.

Some of my favorites:

RPG: The Suikoden series, particularly Suikoden II and III. IV is awfully mediocre, and I wouldn't bother with it. The Lunar ports for PS1 are very good, if you like retro offerings. "Deus Ex: The conspiracy" is also a steal for $20.

Shooter: Get the original "Medal of Honor" - the series was wonderful back before they started taking themselves so friggin' seriously. I also thought the first "Ghost Recon" was a faithful port. The first "Max Payne" is also worth a rental, in my opinion.

Platform: ICO. Simply the best game available for the PS2, in my opinion.

Other: The Silent Hill games are good horror offerings, the Metal Gear Solid games are well-done (albeit MGS2 has perhaps the most obnoxious plot ever), and I'll admit to being a sucker for the Harvest Moon series.

People punching each other: Tekken 4, Soul Calibur II.
