Well technically Americans and British speak the same language, but the slang words are differently entirely.

For instance, an American goes to a party looking for pussy. Some big guy decides he doesn't like him, so he kicks his ass and throws him out. The American says "Ya fuckin jerk-off!"

The british version would be: A Brit goes to a shindig looking for muff. Some big bloke decides he doesn't like him, so he kicks his arse and throws him out. The Brit says "Ya fuckin tosser!"

For some reason, the word "ass" was twisted and confused on it's way to the US, so in the US "ass" is a synonym for someone's hind quarters, as opposed to other countries where is means donkey. Jackass is the same way in the US, instead of being synonomous with donkey, it became a meaningless insult.

We're just different that way.

Do you care to John Major, your rock of ages, that I will be the chicken dinner. I'll buy you all a round of Penelope Cruz, with my Pam Shriver. Assuming you don't get Jonathan Ross'd.

I've never met a person in my life who'd call it a shindig, or muff for that matter. Its still party and pussy over here too, unless you're talking about the big fluffy bit above...

And Lecters right, someone Google up a Cockney Rhyming Slang Dictionary.
