To quote a friend...

QUOTE
Apparantly the specific name used to claim responsiblity for this bombing ("Secret Organisation Group of al-Qaeda [literally the base] of Jihad Organisation in Europe", going by BBC News) has never been used before, and the claim hasn't been verified yet.

But yes, a European branch of al-Qaeda has supposedly claimed responsibility. Actual story here.

MSN says at least 33 dead, although I swear I heard 41 somewhere. I'm not sure what's new, I've been asleep.

40 dead and 700 injured, according to Yahoo. I just got up this morning and my friend Claude TC IMed me asking if I'd heard yet. Luckily, none of his friends were hurt, though a brother of one of his mates would have been riding the tube if he hadn't stayed home sick from school.
I finally got a sig!

Wait, what exactly happened? I've been on vacation for a few days now, so I haven't heard anything. Is this on the same scale as the 9/11 attacks (I don't mean in body count, I mean in destruction)?

*runs to turn on the news*

Edit:

There were 700-900 people on each of the affected trains at the time, he added.

There could be a lot more dead according to CNN.com...

Not meant as a personal criticism to you, Chyld.

Why do the news reports always seem so preocupied with the body count?
They're continuously updating the dead and the injured count... always seems like they're going for the f*cking world record!

That annoys me big time.
One dead person, or even "only" an injured one, is bad enough... geez!

It's pretty horrific, but at times like this the cynic in me and the nice guy in me tussle.
The nice guy feels bad and thinks "shit, poor bastards, poor, poor, bastards."

The cynic in me however thinks "wait, didn't I read somewhere that 50,000 civilians have died since 911 - apparently unavoidable casualites in the War on Terror, little Iraqi kids with arms blown off and Mum missing, Afghanistani parents wondering why their little nippers didn't come home last night ... let alone those still imprisoned without charge in horrible conditions."

I dunno, it's all horrible, but for some reason we all seem to be so much more upset when it's white bodies being buried ...

I don't care for the colour of the bodies of the dead people or their nationalities (I'm even sorry for the poor US soldiers and their fools' crusade in Iraq).

What irritates me is the Media eagerness to update their body counts.

And yes, sh*t happens all over the world... but some is happening for so long one doesn't pay the attention it deserves - and being so, maybe one pays more attention to these "shock events".

Up next in the UK- racial attacks increase, more Union Jacks go up in shop windows, tabloids stir up the “immigration problem” again, anti-Muslim sentiment shoots up, and I thank god im living a million miles away. My families safe and sound, but what on earth lies round the corner? More fuel for the War Without End?

Akhem, I think it's safe to say this to all our British friends here : Give into the terrorists already and kick Blair out of office for provoking this, pull the troops out of Iraq and don't join up with an asshole like Bush again. Hey, it worked for Spain.

And yes, the death count in Iraq today was likely higher than in London and to those innocent people, who had absolutely no choice in what happened to them or their country, I send my deepest condolences. As for the people of Britain I hope that they'll see this as a reason to kick Tony Blair's government out of office. They are lucky enough to have a choice as to whether they'll be attacked again, whereas the only way the Iraqis can stop the constant murder and torture in their nation is through slow, grueling guerilla warfare over several years.

Bateman - I thought that too. It's horrible, but there are places where this sort of thing is relatively common, and no one pays that much attention... it just seems to be taken as a matter of course by those of us lucky enough to not usually have to deal with such things. I posted the following on the subject on another forum...

QUOTE
As I was saying to someone earlier, we're oblivious to this sort of horror most of the time, and can't really imagine it as real, or connected to real life. It was sorta a point the turrists were originally making, I believe. Even after 9/11, which basically just turned into a legend a scant year or two after the event with the help of GWB (although it probably would have anyway), something like this comes as a total shock. Our safe society just isn't equipped to comprehend this most of the time. When you take comfort for granted, it's hard to empathise deeply with someone who's in fear of their life...

In another year this will most likely be forgotten too, except by those personally affected...

It could be that white folks (speaking of the majority) might personally know more residents of London than we do of, say, Iraq. But I suspect it's more to do with suddenly comprehending such atrocities as real. We read about it in the news and go "oh that's terrible, those poor people" and then go eat lunch. Then it happens to 'us', and we're all like, "whoa, holy shit, this stuff actually happens!".

QUOTE (From an MSN conversation I had earlier)
x says:
it feels like part of this whole thing is that, even though the bombing will only really affect a small number of people over the long term
x says:
it feels like it could change everything, like it might be a catalyst for something else
x says:
that's even what it felt like with 9/11
Rhu says:
and it spawned a war
Rhu says:
there had to be an explanation/solution/retribution, because there always is in movies, so we jumped straight into a war without questioning it
Rhu says:
i think people will be a little wiser on this occasion in terms of reactions, but as you say, it feels like a whole new page just turned over
Rhu says:
that's what worries me most, beyond the immediate damage... "well we can't pull out of iraq now, that would be letting the terrorists win..."
Rhu says:
someone asshole's gonna say that

Well done, Kirby. You were the first.
