QUOTE (Madam Corvax @ Jul 7 2005, 01:17 PM)
Laughlym, I guess IDs are inevitable now. Welcome to the rest of Europe. The last stronghold of civil rights and freedom shall now fall.

This is one of the few issues I feel strongly against in this country. The entire concept's stupid, I already have 4 pieces of ID that I carry around in my wallet, now the government wants me to pay up for a card that I can be locked up for leaving in the house\pub.

If the scheme becomes mandatory them I'm jumping ship.

Salad, bugger off, my capital citys being blown up. Run back to the Debate Club if you need a fight.

And I'm hoping for the love of all that's holy that we don't get the ID card works. I don't want to have to join a protest march before I go back up North.

And where would you go? Cross the pond? I believe Americans are trying to intorduce identifications using youtr retina (or whatever that bit of eye is called).

We have been suffering it for 50 years now, and only when I had spent some time in England did I realise that it is not at all necessary. It is just to make your life more miserable.

Lord knows. Canada probably, since a couple of my friends moved there last year. Either that or somewhere warm and english speaking like New zealand\Austrailia.

I'm sure all the countries in question already have\are planning similar schemes, but I'd rather not watch this country erode it's citizens freedom from center stage.

Its a worrying concept. I really think a scheme of that nature would do more harm than good. And for every anti-terrorism step that's taken, there are people who'll find a way round them.

P.S. In case anyone was concerned, my sisters and their families are safe.

According to my sources, "41 dead at the moment. Thousands injured".

For the record, Wikipedia is a loosely edited source. Here's the real act:
http://www.epic.org/...ism/hr3162.html

There is no national ID in the US. People just spout off "patriot act" without understanding what it does.

People need to concern themselves with the real threat, the ones blowing up innocents, before coming down on the government so quickly.

Run back to the Debate Club if you need a fight.

In pretty purple text to help you understand.

Wow. I was really hoping that this was one of those joke topics such as Ham Salad's 2012 olympics thing. I hadnt read the news yet and was hoping that just maybe...

Edit: Ok it went from 2 to 41... if thats how it looks I'd imagine it's going to continue to rise. That's just far from good. On behalf of all the boards crazy leftist Americans (pretty much just me) I send my sympathies.

Are you kidding? We can't back down to the terrorists now, if we give up then they've won, etc etc.

And the death toll isn't fixed yet, especially with people still dying from injuries...

I am glad your sisters are safe, Walkingcarpet. So is my friend. I just gon an e-mail from him that he is safe. Although heaven knows how is he going to get home tonight - he was emailing from work.

Some French souurces on our radio were mentioning thousands of casualties, I hope they mean "injured" rather than dead...

Holy jesus, Corvax. Yes, they definitely mean 'injured'. The death toll is, as far as I'm aware, still below fifty (although rising as people are found dead, or are dying from injuries, since some are pretty horrific).

I've got family in London too. I won't know about them until tomorrow though. Everyone I'm related to or am friends with originated from England, so pretty much everyone I know personally is affected in some way. Was talking to a guy earlier who has a whole truckload of friends studying in London at the mo. He was... unsettled.
