Astrologer Sues NASA Over Comet Mission
Astrologer Sues NASA Over Comet Mission

MOSCOW Jul 5, 2005 — NASA's mission that sent a space probe smashing into a comet raised more than cosmic dust it also brought a lawsuit from a Russian astrologer.

Marina Bai has sued the U.S. space agency, claiming the Deep Impact probe that punched a crater into the comet Tempel 1 late Sunday "ruins the natural balance of forces in the universe," the newspaper Izvestia reported Tuesday. A Moscow court has postponed hearings on the case until late July, the paper said.

Scientists say the crash did not significantly alter the comet's orbit around the sun and said the experiment does not pose any danger to Earth.

The probe's comet crash sent up a cloud of debris that scientists hope to examine to learn how the solar system was formed.

Bai is seeking damages totaling $300 million the approximate equivalent of the mission's cost for her "moral sufferings," Izvestia said, citing her lawyer Alexander Molokhov. She earlier told the paper that the experiment would "deform her horoscope."

NASA representatives in Russia and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., could not be reached for comment on the case.

ABC News

I wasted a few hours at work checking the progress of this thing...

When I found out it was the size of a Volkswagen beetle, i was disappointed that they did not actually use one... if i was on death row and NASA said: "Lethal Injection? or Driving a VW at 23000mph into a comet?"

I'd be like: "I'm there dude!"

Aw, hell... i'd do it now.

That’s like 6.8 miles per second!!!

Getting back to the point...

i agree with this woman in principal. i think bombarding celestial missiles is enviro-galactically irresponsible. They say that they wouldn't be seriously altering the comets corse by striking it, but considering the comets massive trajectory, wouldn't that have massive consequences over the long run? I mean if that thing hits us later I’m going to be pretty miffed!

i think we're getting a little too cocky about what we can get away with here... and i know people will defend NASA to me and say: "they're scientists dude... I’m pretty sure they know what they're doing!"
And I’m pretty bloody sick of that argument because quite frankly, men of science used to believe that the world was flat! men of science who 'knew what they were doing' used to drill holes in peoples heads to allow headaches to escape!!!

Why couldn't they land something on it to drill and film? (Yes the added weight would also affect, but not as bad). Because such an operation would cost more i hear you say? Yeah, well it would be cheaper to throw garbage out the window then pay men to collect it, but there's a good reason why we do that!!!

Fucking up the planet wasn't enough....

They don't know what they're doing!!! it's lunacy!!! (does anyone else get the intended irony of using the term 'lunacy' to describe the actions of NASA?)

Anyway...

This woman has a point, although i don't know why the money should go to her...
she has no legitimate claim to it...

But I love her remark about it deforming her horoscope... that's a classic.
as space travel 'progresses' that is something people are going to have to deal with... the astrological disasters that mankind is destined to initiate...

I can just see the horoscopes of tomorrow...

CAPRICORN: this week brings fortune as you will make a work related decision that will generate new and welcomed income in the following months. You may also attract the attention of a sexy co-worker who will be working closer with you this week. however now with mars being the house of Leo, thanks to the NASA 'blue sky on mars' project increasing it's planetary mass and knocking it off course, you may find many of these opportunities going to less deserving colleagues.

I see it like this; >aybe it did alter the tradjectory of the comet, but maybe the comet was going to hit earth at somepoint anyway, and the highspeed garbage can's knocked it into a safer route (I.E. One that won't collide during my lifetime).

After that the whole chaos\probability thing melts the brain.

Astronomy is as baseless as some religion I've never heard of.

Meh, it didn't do much. So if a comet/huge asteroid IS headed for earth, this proves that we're even More useless to prevent certain doom?

Whatever. If a comet IS actually headed this way, they can just change the news the next day, say it was a mistake and we'll worry about something else for awhile. Sharks? Gary Condit? What's next?

I'm pretty sure if NASA were found responsible for coming into my home and murdering every member of my family and severing all of my fingers, I wouldn't be able to convince a court to let me sue for $300 Million. This gal is nuts, and is drawing attention to the ongoing stupidity of the US legal system.

And yeah, astrology = idiotic.

She doesn't own comet. If she does, its her fault for not shooting it when they entered her property.

I don't think what NASA did was all that irresponsible. I DO tend think they have at least a decent idea of what they're doing. After all, a probe the size of a car doesn't sound that big anyway, and unless someone who has examined the facts comes around to say otherwise, I'd tend to trust them on this one.

Also, I think the argument that we can't place any trust in men (and women!) of science because of some blunders some long dead scientists made a long time ago is starting to run a little thin. Those scientists didn't even bother seriously testing their theories, and in many cases, they just ignored evidence against them!

I suspect the science NASA used to check if sending a big old probe into the comet would fuck up its trajectory signifigantly wasn't all that mind blowing or "bleeding edge." To seriously criticize it, I suspect, might be similar to seriously criticizing our use of a household toaster, because hey, who knows, it might blow up in my face one day, scarring me for life! NASA has been in the space business for some time now, and while they've certainly made some mistakes, even tragic ones, they do strike me as the kind of people who consider the reprecussions of their actions. If they thought there was even a small chance that plummetting a probe into the side of a comet might obliterate all life on earth, I somewhat doubt they would go through with it.

Also, on the issue of cost... NASA has serious reasons for worrying about their budget. They are an expensive agency, and a lot of what they do is for purely theoretical reasons. I personally think that's a really neat and worthy goal, but at the same time I can understand why the nation wouldn't just want to bath them with money. One of the reasons we haven't put a man on Mars (or on the moon anymore, for that matter) is that the cost would be astronomical (lol).

Well, it does have some circumstanctial evidence. Luna phases do tend to effect peoples personalities. Ask anyone who works in an ER department what goes down during a full moon.

But who are they going to call in as witnesses in this trail? The experts in the field of course. Who would be ...er.... Nasa?

this entire thing is buggered.

The real question is why she should get the money. Not that there is any chace whatsoever that she will receive a penny but if there was a payout shouldn't we all be entitled to some of that cash? My universe vibes would be just as screwed up as hers.

I think each and everyone on Earth should get $300 million. It's only fair.

If we all wanted a payout we'd have to go class action.

$300 million divided by the population of the planet = not a lot.

All of a sudden I'm reminded of the Elfonlyinn story line with Mcdonalds offering a massive settlement to all the stupid people in the world.

this entire thing is buggered.

The moon is 165000 miles away, and has a literl and measurable influence on the tides. That is to say, all of the water on the planet. We are made up of water, so if someone proposes an argument that the moon has an influence on human emotion, I am listening.

That ain't astrology.

Astrology is the religion based on the idea that extremely distant stars, which appear to be grouped together in certain ways when the vastness of three-dimensional space is under-imagined as a flat plane of equidistant objects, have an influence on our moods and lifestyles. And on study, it don't hold up.

So lunacy may be something, but astrology is not.

Of course, the experts in this trial, were it to happen, would be astologers on one side and NASA on the other.

Well the trial is about causing the comet to hit the earth, so I doubt that many astrologers have experience with intergalatic collisions.

And as for the moon. Luna phases are used in Horoscopes, which is the other thing she's suing about. You will notice the word 'circumstancial' included in my post. There's no definate proof, but weird stuff does tend to happen during a full moon.
