Christian percussionist raises hand.

I played drums in church once. It was pretty awesome for me. No so awesome for the church since drums are not what I would consider my primary instrument by any means. wink.gif

I was raised as a Unitarian Universalist which is pretty laid back in that you don't really spend a lot of time talking or thinking about God. While technically it's a branch of Christianity you pretty much just sit around a talk about how groovy every religion is. We had little celebrations for Jewish holidays and in Sunday school we studied Judaism, Islam and Buddhism just as much as Christianity.

It was pretty neat and I'm glad I got such a great experience of all these other religions. I haven't been to church in years though.

I have an open mind, and I think people who follow a certain religious belief are tops (aside from Satanism, which is silly, and Wicca, which sort of falls apart once they start talking about magic).

I'm an atheist.

Only went to church when I was too little and they made me and never been baptized (thankfully, my parents gave me the choice to be or not to be (heh!) when I was older).

Basically, I feel that religion is a very weird thing, illogical to the bone. But I don't criticize the ones who believe in all those different gods and things... as long as they don't bother me trying to impose their beliefs.

I don't even consider those religions. They seem so cult-y. Like that Kaballah stuff.

I could lapse into my big list of what I am, but for all intents and purposes, I'm an agnostic Discordian. I take my worship of Our Lady of Discord seriously fnord.

And being agnostic, I don't like to make silly statements like "I feel sorry for those that don't believe in God." because I tend to say things like "I feel sorry those that need to believe in an utterly intangible and ubiquitous supreme being that watches their every move in order to make sense of the universe." And it just gets worse from there.

This is, of course, not a place for debate and I don't want it to become that, I just feel that people shouldn't be looking down their noses at others because they think a different way about what makes things we can not prove tick.

Apparantly, the only legal difference between a cult and a religion in Australia is that cults pay taxes. As such, the Church of Scientolgy took the matter to court, and got themselves declared a legal religon, an no longer pay taxes. Don't know how it is elsewhere in the world, though.

My Dad's agnostic, and didn't overly care what religion I was brought up with. Mum's a non-practicing catholic(believes in the bible, but doesn't go to church, or show any other outward signs of religion). As such I was given a lax christian upbringing, though I did go to a catholic highschool. That scared me a bit, as I had never met openly religious people before that. I remember being really shocked on open day when they opened with a prayer. Regardless, belief is something you either have, or you don't. You can't choose to belive in the bible, no matter how much you try. After I left school I finally stopped lying to myself, and came to grips with the fact that Christianity wasn't for me. But I can't come to grips with the concept of no creative intelligence. As such, I'm now a Deist.

Personally, while I think there is room for a higher power that set the universe into motion billions of years ago, its no more likely to be the bloke in the Bible than it is to be, say, the Ancient Greek Titans. At risk of opening this into a debate, the Bible is a mythology, little more.

Oh, it's a Lot more than that.

But I don't condescend, based on what someone believes. I might look down on societies where people aren't ALLOWED to believe what they want, however.

Heccubus, if the Kaballah is practiced properly, it's not a cult, it's occult. It was actually the dominant form of Judaism for a while, but then some mucky-mucks who didn't like it decided they wanted power so they killed the Kaballistic Jews and started what we know (or don't know) today.

Chyldio: He's right. It also teaches lessons and slips little hints in for those who can see them and who want to transfer from religion to spirituality.

Billy Graham is calling it quits soon. I'm not sure I've ever heard him speak, but he has a HUGE following, like 250 million large.

Any one here listen to him?

accepting Jesus Christ as their savior was the most amazing expeirience ive ever had.

I finally have some tme to get into it. I believe we've had debates on God before, but this one is a curious little statement.

1. First of all its been five years since ive accepted christ and i have been a much happier person because of it.

Why exactly are you happier? Can you elaborate?

2. i feel sorry for anyone who doesnt believe in God.

You don't really have to. Honestly. Most people who want to believe in God, do so. If anybody, like me, does not believe that there is god, does so on their own accord. Nobody proselytises to atheism (contrary to some religious groups)

I assume that your happiness about embracing god and sorrow about people who don't believe in god has somethign to do with Pascal's wager. (i.e. if you believe in God you always win). Just tell me, how much are you sure that Christian God is THE true one? How do you know that you are doing the right thing? How about those who believe in Allah? I am sure they are pretty sure that their god is the only one.

Fair play, I partially retract my previous statement, and replace it thus.

The Bible does actually contain a good deal of stuff to live a good life by. Mostly in the New Testament, obviously. For example, the tale of the Good Samaritan teaches us that a.) we shouldn't judge people on their race, creed, or whatever b.) one should treat others as you'd want to be treated. Lets be honest, anyone can relate to those, and they're both quite sensible. Just a shame that so many who follow the book ignore the good bits, and keep ranting about homosexuality.

However, I don't see the events that occured in the Bible as being anymore likely to have happened than the events of ancient mythology, for example, the Seige of Troy. Sure, similar events may have occured (there may have been a siege at a city called Troy, there may have been a charismatic prophet called Jesus, who believed he was/was believed to be the Son of God), but to expect me to believe that God killed every single human but Noah's family in a huge flood is... well... kinda comical, really.

There, everyone smily happy yet? smile.gif
