Brits ready for face off

By Isabel Oakeshott, Evening Standard
10 November 2003

Ten British people have put their names forward to become the first in the world to undergo a face transplant.

Details on plans for the pioneering operation will be announced by surgeons within days.

Teams on both sides of the Atlantic are now confident they have the skills to attempt the operation.

Have you ever read R.L. Stine's Goosebumps CYOA where you get your face pulled off to be transplanted onto some wax figure? Dead creepy. Along with the idea of seeing your beloved deceased's face on SOMEONE ELSE'S HEAD!

Now come on people. <insert sarcasm here> The article clearly states that the doctors and scientist involved see this as being used by those with severe facial burns or disfigurements. There's no way that they would ever allow this to branch into the lucrative field of cosmetic surgery to service the rich and bored. They have to much credability and too high an ethical standing <cease sarcasm here>.

Have made that little point, on a serious side there is a real benefit to this sort of advancement. I have a friend who suffered some severe facial burns at a young age and the idea of being able to structure a new face without disfigurment is being received as a god send by them. And quite frankly I can't blame them for extolling the vitrues of this sort of medical advancement. Let's be realistic, people as a whole are not good at dealing with people with facial disfigurments. There is a major stigma associated with it & while we all would like to think we don't hold such prejudices. The reality is a lot of people do.

Hmm, that is an interesting, yet good point.

I guess if I had a disfigured face I would also want to fix it. I guess it is the same as having a disfigured leg, and getting a protestic.

I think it is much the same. However, as my opening paragraph indicates I don't believe that this will not go the way of all the other forms of cosmetic surgery. All those techniques also started with a valid medical basis (and are also still used as such in some areas), but where money is involved it invariably goes to hell.

Still so long as it does not reach a stupid pricing point that the people that need the service cannot afford it people can do what they like as far as I'm concerned.

All I can think about is the movies this reminds me of (i.e. Vanilla Sky).

I think I'm gonna stop watching movies for a little while.
