Oh JM, stop taking it so personally!

I visited JP, and I acknowledge that 20% of it is not about bashing religion. Most of the topics, however, are just folks acknowledging one anopther's posts, so it's been kind of bogged down. Not that it has anything to do with JP: that's been going on a lot everywhere. Like Joprdan said, it's numerous new subjects every day, all filled with "yeah" and "I agree" and "You so rock." It really takes a lot of time to wade through all that.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

There are TWO bloody articles on the entire site devoted not to bashing a specific religion but to making fun of one fellow who claims that everyone is going to hell. And the reason there are new topics so often is because I try to keep the site updated. It's actually a fairly small forum and there aren't a lot of new topics, maybe one or two per day, so I'm quite happy with it.

This thread is funny and disturbing at the same time. As a "newbie" and one who will no longer post here anymore after this, its pathetic to watch the "oldies" complain about how things used to be. Some asshole told me I should shut about about a complaint about the oldbies generally being hostile and looking for fights. Its what I see. This asshole said it was because I was not kissing his ass and being too sensitive. Here's the proof, the olbies can only "get off" by looking for a fight with someone "just like it used to be." Whoever was the victim previously, was probably sane to check out permanantly, its obvious, this board sucks. Not because of newbies coming in and AGREEING as you dicks put it, ,but because you dicks can't have fun without starting fights aparently, I was right. Shit you fools, theres hundreds of message boards where people like you are not TOLERATED. Geeks who have spent their last 4 years posting on the same board who have become embedded into their own little troll world where they are the trolls and anyone who joins up is attacked because these dicks are fucking bored are not worth anybody's time and need to grow up. Anybody who likes to have fun and not waste their time arguing all the time should head over to Robot Lounge or any one of a hundred other forums where people generally throw fucks like you away immediately for being total dicks. T

This thread says it all I guess, some jcakass is bored so he wants to attack some newbie and gang up like a lynching party with his geek friends, while another jackass has moved to his own forum aparently either because he's sick of the bullshit, or he's basically creating his own troll-a-thon bitch board.

Thats it. I call it quits this board officially sucks. Its washed up. Maybe its because there's no more star wars movies to bitch about or everybody agrees now: star wars sucks.

You know what, nobody has anything new to say, (The Newbies) probably because anything they post is immediately jumped on by hostile bored veteran geeks who's board has become their entire social world it appears.

I'm sure this is the way all you dicks want it, and you hope i'll lead the rest of the newbies out of your little cave, so be it, jack off on eachother here and fight eachother why don't you, really who gives a shit!

first of all, nobody's attacking the "newbies"

you're the only person here insulting anyone, and you're insulting EVERYONE... you're the only person here who seems to be starting fights... the rest of us a getting along fine...

there is no eveidence of your accusations anywhere, you are spouting absolute nonsense, and you can feel free to start your own MBs and lead lead our poor hard done by newbies away...

no matter how many times you "leave" you still have the same M.O.
still clinging to that beligerent interpritation of a piped piper fantasy...

you call everyone here pathetic, but we're not the ones who are so socially retarded they can't even get along with people they refuse to leave alone...

so tell us, why do you keep comming back?

and drop this "I'm a newbie" bullshit because no one's buying it...
THAT'S "pathetic" !!!

grow some balls and start a fight in the real world...

VAMP - You're way off. You don't even know what I'm talking about. Having said that, I'm glad you're leaving. Barend said what I wanted to say.

----------

But I think that's the ticket, too many topics being made. I was waiting for the great SW discussion revival after the new film, because for a while we all got tired of convincing ourselves how bad it sucked (jariten was cool and added some depth to discussion) But this new EPISODE III convention is just not the same as the old talks.

I'm just dissappointed that's all. I've been looking foreward to a big SW debate for some time now. I've even restorted to an email war with some film school student who LOVES the PT's.

I suppose a villian was the wrong title for this thread. But back then we always had one antagonist in every big exciting thread, so I made the connection that way. But it probably has more to due with over posting topics.

And a few pages ago you were saying you wanted Hannible back, Jordan. Be careful what you wish for.

And if you're looking for good debates, or stupid debates, they're around. I haven't been to the Star Wars forum in ages, but I've taken part in plenty. Hell, it's the entire purpose of the Debate Club, right?

I post in SW forum whenever I can. But it was only once or twice that I managed to scrape a good converssation there. It is because I have time to post only once a day and by that time the topic I have posted in usually falls off the first page.

I don't miss Hannibal though. I miss JYAMG and good debates of old from SW. Sometimes, just for the fun of it, I dig old topics, especially this one, when civilian first deigned to comment on my post. I wonder if you still remember it, civ smile.gif

Ah! There's nothing like nostalgia.

I guess this forum is like everything else - it changes with time. We may be having conversations in another twelve months about where everyone has gone. I for one have enjoyed watching the development of this forum, it's the first forum I've been involved in from inception (I know there was Lance and Eskimo before it, but I'm talking about Chefelf specifically)and it's been great to see it develop and grow into the raging beast it now is.

I say good luck to all those who join the ride, of coure it would be nice if people all posted in a sensible manner and we were abel to follow clearly defined threads, but that's the nature of mass influx. People want to be seen and heard. I've been coming and going for a while sometimes posting prolifically and more of late intermitantly. I've jumped onto another forum to stay in more direct communication with a couple of members whose thoughts and view I respect because they are whitty and articulate, and know how to have a coversation. But in my time here I've also been involved in verbal wars - it is the nature of forums, that;s just the way they sometimes go and despite your best efforts you get dragged into it at times

To Vampsmasher I'd say good luck to whatever you decide, I think you've misunderstood what Jordan was saying in his post - the people he outlined as "villians" are all people that are more or less respected because they know how to have a discussion and that's really the crux of the matter. At the moment there is an awful lot of posting and not a great deal of discussion. This will change I'd say, but in the meantime we do what we can to keep ourselves entertained and yeah for those people that have been here a while it's good to remenice at times - there is a big deifference between a forum of around 100 people with about 50 regular posters and a sudden increase to 700+ with around 600 posters.

Anyway a big shout out to all the old timers and it's good to see you all again thumbsup.gif

I started this forum two reasons:

Firstly, to test out the IPB software for possible use for Lance & Eskimo. Lance & Eskimo's old message board was being completely overrun by spam and was pretty archaic by comparison. People who came to forums expected a certain thing (avatars, emoticons, that stupid stuff) and they weren't getting it at L&E.

Secondly, for people who read my Star Wars articles to talk. I got tired of responding to 20 emailsl a day about my articles and every Tom, Dick and Harry listing their reasons why my reasons were right/wrong, etc. That seemed to spark a lot of interesting talk so I guess it worked out well.

The test went well and the word went out to some old L&Eers and people who'd emailed me about Star Wars and that was that. In 6 months time we'd accumulated more registered posters than L&E had in 3 years. So it was successful on that level.

However, there were people complaining at L&E 3 years ago about "the good old days" before Jordan was there. And there'll be someone that registers next year complaining in 2 years (Lord willing) about the good old days.

People LOVE to talk about the good old days.

What shocks me is that there are so many people on forums who only seem to want to talk to a small select group of people. Well we had 100 members at one point now we are near 800. No matter how you feel about it, the community has grown. It will continue to grow though I never thought it would be this popular.

I think Vampsmasher's concerns are legitimate, though I don't think he went about voicing his concerns in the most constructive way. His concerns are the same as mine. I don't like seeing a "newbie" (God, I hate that term) treated poorly by anyone. You don't have the right to flame someone whether you've been here since day one or you just signed up today. So Vampsmasher, your concerns make sense, but I don't think anyone was being particularly hostile here.

QUOTE (Mnesymone @ Jun 15 2005, 11:42 PM)
And most of the old guard has buggered off - plus with the subforum layout, though much cooler and easier to find the thread you want to find, if you want to do a general forum thing it takes ages.

I think the departure of the old villains, the winding down of the screening room projects that had great readership (Glamis the Great, Starry Nights, The Lord of the Rings and the Star Wars Outings) and ROTS really ended the whole good old days thing.
(I don't suppose anyone from the admin group is willing to fire and brimstone down the member count and get the old forum back? Still, the General Discussion board is doing fine)

Most of the old guard has not buggered off. Most of the "old guard" is active on this topic here. JYAMG is the only person who's said that he has left but he still pokes his head in every so often. His problem was the same as Jordan's seems to be, he doesn't like the community since it's grown.

The admin group is certainly NOT willing to pare down the member group at all. I don't know if you're being entirely serious (I hope you aren't) but people invariably bring this "solution" up. So how do we determine who goes and who stays? Do we cut membership off at a certain number? If so, what number? Is it based on "quality" of posts? If so, who determines that quality?

Don't take this the wrong way everyone, but if you don't like the idea of new people or don't like the fact that there are too many people here then maybe it's time to analyze how you spend your free time. If you just want to talk to the same people all the time, make your own forum or email list even. An online forum is no place to be if you don't want to hear the same discussions over and over particularly regarding Star Wars.

Remember, Star Wars people, you weren't the first to discuss anything here at Chefelf.com. Debates we were having two years ago had been debated a thousand times already at TFN and other fan sites. So don't be so impatient when someone rehashes something we already discussed because we certainly are not pioneers in that respect.

I don't know. I like all of you and I want you all to stay and have a good time but I just think sometimes people involved in forums forget what the purpose of a forum is in the first place. I met so many awesome people at the old L & E forums: Kat, Deven, annajones, Officer B, etc. And there have been so many more great people I've met here.

I had fun then and I'm having fun now. I don't miss the Good Old Days. If I spend too much time wishing for them I'll be missing out on all the good times and good people I'm going to meet next week, next month and next year.

Well said Chef, despite the fact I am all too busy to be around all the time I do enjoy my few minutes browsing and posting every week, the discussions that take place daily are interesting. I just wished Vamp had gone about venting his unhappiness in a better manner and looking back he somewhat has a valid point, I find this to be a problem on every forum I visit, people seem to hammer on "newbies" and for what?? Doesn't make sense to me but then again you are dealing with numerous people who have different points of view, I guess if everyone was the same and treated people the same we wouldn't have discussions or debates.............just my 2 cents.

Ok., Chefelf, I feel I must speak.
Maybe it is just me overreacting as usual, but I felt like an anti-social git just for saying that I missed good old days.

It is not really that surprising. Most people fear the unknown and feel good only in familiar environment. The new members are a huge unknown factor. I don’t blame anyone for being rather vary of new members. We are all territorial.

Before I registered, I had been reading the forum for months, to make sure I understand the rules and general tone of conversation. I don’t think anyone has worked harder than me to be accepted and liked in these parts. So how about those new members being nasty to everyone? After a few encounters with new members when I was called names and asked questions “What country are you from, Borneo?” do you really blame me for not wanting to talk to all and sundry who registers here? I much prefer talking to old members, who I know are highly unlikely to offend me like that.

And how about new members blatantly disregarding the rules? I am sure that if you check the topics I have posted since I registered, you’ll find that most of them are about other people’s birthday. They were the only topics I did not feel guilty starting, an attitude you won’t find all that common.

I don’t know, but I stayed here not because IPB has a lovely colour scheme or the emoticons are nice. I stayed because I found intelligent, witty people I can talk to. But as you say, maybe it is time to analyze how I spend my free time. alien.gif

To shove my oar in here, I dunno, maybe I had Girlfriend Of A Webmaster status, but I never felt unwelcome when I joined, and I never got insulted. The only times people got snooty with me was when I was actively debating with them. And unlike M. Corvax, I can't say I exactly made that much of an effort to fit in. Who is flaming the newbies (besides me) and why are they flaming them?

edit - I should point out that although I registered a fair while back, I only started posting outside of the Fullyramblomatic forums a month or two ago. Or whenever it was. So I wasn't around for 'the good old days' and don't really have oldbie status.

Personally, I see the forums I frequent like I saw my first few weeks at university. You get there, nobody knows who the hell you are, and vice versa, and if you get out there and do your thing, somebodys going to like it, so that before two months is out, you've got someone you can get ratarsed with in between "studying". Only replace getting ratarsed with banging on about pirates, and replace "studying" with pretending to bang on about Star Wars.

The way I see it, as long as the hoardes of n00bs coming in with the wake of ROTS don't bother me, and don't steal all of Chefelfs bandwidth so that he goes poor, then they can hang around the place. Cretins like SQPR, however, have no place in my universe, and will be flamed to a light crisp.

I've no idea if that's whaty we're talking about, but its what I've got to say. Incidently, it is nice to see a forum grow, develop, wither, repeat. I've been on one forum for nigh on five years now, and its not changed a lot, just a couple thousand more people have joined.
When you lose your calm, you feed your anger.
