Billy Dee Williams, the man who gave us Lando Calrissian biggrin.gif, once said in an interview that he felt Lando was misunderstood by the public. To make his point, he revealed that after "The Empire Strikes Back", he would get recognized by kids when he went to pick up his daughter from school, and the kids would try to pick fights with him and accused him of betraying Han Solo.

Let us conisder the position Lando was in when we first met him in ESB: he's the administrator of Cloud City at Bespin. He has just been confronted by Darth Vader, an evil, half-maimed machine man tyrant who also just happens to be the representative/right hand man/enforcer/henchman/bodyguard/head thug of the evil, frog fraced Emperor Palpatine. Thanks to his bounty hunter Boba Fett tracking the Millenium Falcon - Lando's old ship - Darth Vader knows that Han Solo - old friend - Princess Leia and all the rest are heading for Cloud City and he threatens to destroy Cloud City if Lando does not cooperate. It's the old "chop off a finger/toe to save the hand/food" scenario (or chop off some miscellaneous limb to save the rest of the body, which ever you prefer)

Think about it: stand by your old friend and watch the millions of innocent people who live in Cloud City get blasted into smithereens, or betray your old friend and save millions of innocent lives. What would you have done?

I know I'm just stating the obvious, but Lando (who has been dismissed by some Star Wars fans as simply being a black version of Han Solo) clearly didn't want to betray Han. Of course, as we all know, Lando departs at the end of ESB to get Han back from Jabba the Hutt and returns in ROTJ to take part in the rescue operation.
I am the Fisher King.

I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an obi-wan to go.

When I was a kid and watched ESB I thought Lando was a bad guy. But after what he did in ROTJ and after some years passed I noticed that really Lando didn't have a choice and that he really was a good guy. smile.gif
Sorry, you won't be seeing a smartass sig here. Try with the next poster.

Lando is probably my favorite character in the Trilogy. Tied with Han Solos and that chick in the Hoth base that orders the Ion Cannon to fire. biggrin.gif
