I was watching ANH and Luke was talking to Obi-Wan. Kenobi said he hadn't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since "before you were born," implying that he had gone into hiding much earlier then he did. This is a nitpick, to be sure, but its just another contradiction that GL has introduced. =\

Oh yeah, that's another one contradiction... But whatever, let's just forget about Star Wars and get on with life.

Oh yeah, that's another one contradiction... But whatever, let's just forget about Star Wars and get on with life.

But this is the thing about Star Wars. Even though it creates dissenting opinion, it still draws us all together, and it's a very bonding, universal experience, whether you hate it or like it. What other movies have that kind of power? It's so strange.

I WANT to "get on with my life" but I'm so bloody obsessed with these stupid films! I have projects and things to do and the one thing I want to do (as a "public service") is to do my own illustrated version of the prequels as I see how they should've been---but I just KNOW this is pointless and takes away from all the other illustrating projects I've got sitting around---what the hell is wrong with me! I SHOULD get over this! Man, do I need a friggin' psychiatrist or something---or is Hannibal right and Lucas has cast his spell on us all and possessed our minds---"you will think about nothing but Star Wars, no matter HOW crappy it becomes!"

As much as I hate the prequels, and I really, really do, I must give a free pass on this "inconsistency". This one I will actually let go.

When Ben says, "I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since before you were born", he's off by a few days maybe?

It's a figure of speech that we all use. We all say stuff like that. We say stuff like, I haven't spoken to that guy since high school, when you probably ran into him a few times in your early college years.

According to the film, Obi-Wan is called Obi-Wan for the first few minutes of Luke's life. Then he takes him into hiding. Would you rather him have said, "I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since you were a few hours old"?

Anyway, with the myriad of other problems to complain about in this film, I think we should really let this one go.

It could also mean a year or two BEFORE Luke was born, too. I wouldn't have minded if Anakin had given Obi-Wan the nickname just to jibe him.

I thought he said "... since all but before you were born." I guess that would mean the same thing, but the way it's worded gives you a little leeway concerning the actual time.

Obi-Wan Kenobi... now that's a name I have not heard for a long time... a long time.
"My uncle said he was dead"
No, he's not dead. Not yet.
"You know him?"
Well of course I know him, he's me! I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi since all before you were born.
"Then the droid does belong to you."
I can't seem to remember ever having owned a droid.

That's how it went - from "long time" and "all before you born" I got the impression of more than just twenty years sitting around.

It is something that I've learned to ignore. The straight answer is that Lucas, who supposedly cares so passionately for 'his' universe, forgot that line. As far as I'm concerned, Obi-Wan was just trying to emphasise how long ago it was that he was called Obi-Wan. Yes, it's an inconsistancy, but they're so common in the prequels that I've just become immune to them.

Good lord. This is one of the lamest nitpicks I have seen to date, much like "there is always a bigger fish".

I agree with prequeldenial, it's just a figure of speech. Did any of you learn what a hyperbole was back in high school? Or am I assuming too much when I believe everyone here has a high school diploma?

Yes I did and that is not one.

Hyperbole:

A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect, as in I could sleep for a year or This book weighs a ton.

He is not exaggeration for any sort of effect. In fact he isn't exaggerating at all. He is simply saying he hasn't gone by the name of Obi-wan since before Luke was born. His name has been Ben for the last twenty odd years it's that simple and Lucas STILL screwed it up no two ways about it.
