The reason the old models looked real - they were!
The CGI ships and sets have a distinct lack of texture to them - Palpatine's carpet being perfeclty uniformly red with a pile thickness of 0 - every time I saw that carpet I was taken out of the moment.

I've been of the opinoin that there should be more puppets even when I was a stupid kid that liked the PT. It just looks more real than having everythign in CG.

Honest to God, if Lucas could write and direct, the CGI could be cheap and the movie would still be good.
