Was I the only one who couldn't help but think during the shot of the burning space ship coming in for a landing that it was intentionally filmed in such a manner as to evoke the shuttle tragedy? Straight line re-entry, burning, disintigrating as it hits the atmosphere.

Then when it clips the control tower, the tower collapses in a manner very much reminiscent of the WTC (the straight down collapse of the towers had a lot to do with the lattice cage that surrounded them, something not at all evident on the control tower which in the film takes a side impact from an object that would appear to have dwarfed it in terms of mass.)

Am I paranoid or does anyone else think that Lucas was seeking to score some unearned emotional punch by evoking two recent and still-raw tragedies?

You're not paranoid, you're cynical and over emotional, a basket case I think is the term. Give me a break.

I thought the more direct reference (and not disaster related) was on the meet-up moon with Yoda, Bail and Obi-wan. When we first see the moon, there is a sort of homage to "2001: A Space Odyssey" with the guys in retro-future space suits standing on the crater's edge, pointing downward.

that's what I thought anyway.

I think that's a BIT of a stretch, I think. wink.gif

I think the ship burned the way anything would when re-entering the atmosphere. I think that the tower collapsing, however, looked like it was slow motion and it was really fake looking, not really 9-11ish in my opinion.

I definately have to agree with SPQR, Xombie....that last post frightened me. I had no idea people could spew out such...BULL SHIT. Yah and I don't suppose that little green Yoda was symbolic of a spore of Anthrax and the trade federation with their silly hats is reflective of a currupt papacy!?!? HAHAHA

Maybe not a homage...maybe just a plain old Lucas style copy

I thought Yoda is a spore of Anthrax, with a dash of midoclorians.
The trade federation represent Chinese delegates to the WTO, everyone knows that.

Yeah, man... that's a bit of a stretch there.... But it seems like something Lucas would do... I bet he says that it was intentional in the DVD commentary.

The tower busting reminded me of the fall of Barad Dur from the end of Return Of The King.

There isn't going to be any baroness. This bickering is pointless. The issue ain't pussy, the issue is monkey.

Guys, don't give in to the dark side.

In all honesty, I did mentally connect the crashing ship with the Columbia tragedy when I saw, both times. I don't know if it was intentional, though.
