The difference between Vader's no and Luke's no is that Luke's doesn't sound like a moron. Vader just sounds rediculous.

The Darth Vader scene where he screams "Nooo!" is a good scene.  It's funny that the nitpickers complain that Lucas has never been in touch with another human being, yet they don't even understand human emotional responses.

The best way I can explain a nitpicker's response to a similar situation is as follows.

*The scene takes place in a hospital late at night.  The Nitpicker was drunk driving with his girlfriend and got into a huge car accident.  Several people were killed, although the Nitpicker barely survived*

DOCTOR: Nitpicker, can you hear me?

NITPICKER: Yes, Doctor.  Where is my girlfriend?  Is she all right?

DOCTOR: I'm afraid that in your refusal to allow a sober person to drive, you got into a huge car accident.  Five people have been killed, including your girlfriend.  Furthermore, you have lost the ability to use both of your arms and legs....

Normal Human Response
NITPICKER(emotions of anger, guilt, and regret building up):Noooooo!

Nitpicker's Response
NITPICKER(exhibiting no emotions):Drat.  Anyhow, get me another beer.

I cant agree with you. Have you ever had someone who is close to you die, especially unexpectedly

You're FIRST response is disbelief, then maybe anger. Hell if Vader had mimed Luke's "That's not true, that's impossible" it would've been better. Vader first response should've been disbelief, especially consider Pappy had promised she wouldn't die

I think Vader did say something to that effect: "That can't be. I saw her. She was alive." The problem is it was done poorly by one-take-Lucas, just like the "noooooooooo" that followed it.

Right, that's what we're saying. Have no emotion at all.

Nah, man - sure maybe Vader can have remorse and pain over it, but there are so many more subtle ways through which to convey this than through that single, contrived "Nooooo!" The cheese factor in that was through the roof. There are so many other dramatic choices a writers/actor could have gone with that would have been far more powerful within the context of the scene.

Subtext is a beautiful thing - and yes it's possible, even when behind a mask and helmet. Vader could have still emoted the pain without totally projecting it in the 50's style manner that he did.

Luke's "Noooo!" is terrible. I laugh at it every time I watch ESB.

So what your saying is that those of us with the ability to see through bullshit, are of two variety...

Hypocritical liars who stupidly yell Nooooooooooooooo!!!

or sociopaths...

That’s lovely...

George Lucas didn't have to personally ask you to insult us and attempt to discredit us with that pathetically thinly veiled personal insult to all of us...

I know a lot of people who have died, ALOT!!! many of which were close to me, many of which were people who were close to people i was with when they found out...

not one fucking "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" out of the lot of us....

"What?" seems to be the statistical winner....

and someone who doesn't like the PT getting drunk and occasioning the death of their girlfriend is in no way comparable to some guy slaughtering a group of children that look up to them, choking their girlfriend who they firmly believed was cheating on them then trying quite savagely to kill their best friend, then getting their legs cut off and catching on fire....

It’s pretty different...
He wanted to kill her, he was angry at her; he then left her for dead and had a huge fight....

It’s not like they were laughing and joking, then suddenly he wakes up and told she's dead...

it wasn't the situation for such a delayed outburst...

Unless he suffered from personality instabilities so ridiculously comical and complex that we would have had to see them commonly displayed in the OT, which they are not ...

oh, but i forgot the golden rule of gushery...

Prequels and sequels don't have to have anything to do with the films whose name they are relying on to sell them to the countless minions of unquestioning sycophants...

so Star Wars is supposed to be subtle now? Have you ever actually watched any of the films?

I have PROOF that the NOOOOOO is cheesy.

The other day I was about to enter my house when the door slammed shut, locking me out! I stood on the porch and let out a loud "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!". Then looked around furtively in embarrassment hoping nobody saw me.

I would image that would be pretty much how Anakin felt.

Try it yourself. It's fun.

P.S: Thanks for making this thread 3 pages BTW. tongue.gif

I'm just waiting for a good explanation as to why Luke's whiny bitch scream of "That's not true! That's impossible! Nooooooooo! Nooooo!" in ESB is more acceptable than Vader's "Nooooo!" in ROTS.

I have always laughed at that part in ESB, even as a kid. But don't get me wrong, I do like the scene and I think ESB is the best movie in the saga. I just like laughing at how pathetic Luke is.

To see the dark lord of the sith acting like the kid whose mom won't buy him the cereal with the saber-spoon is simply comical.

You laugh when you watch ESB? I'm surprised you value it with your time.

Hamill can act. And Kershner can direct. Those are two good reasons. I'll give you another one.
Lukes "Noooo!!!" comes out of desperation and defiance to Vaders revelation, which he already then suspects to be true. The situations are quite different.

Like someone mentioned earlier in the thread, have you ever lost someone close to you? The last thing you do is strike a pose and go "NOOOOOO!!!!" A simple improvement would have been Vader doubling over in utter silence followed by a room shattering roar.

But you must admit Anakin in ROTS is ten times as better than in AOTC.

And you are also insulting towards poor Storm. Why do you insist everyone who has fun in watching PT is somehow inferior?

PT are diffrent than OT, have weaker execution, but are still very enjoyable. And it wasn`t like OT were not a bit silly films. This was a fairy tale, nothing more. It is your business that you worship those films.

I don't know how many times I have to say this, but at this point he is not the dark lord of the Sith we are familiar with from the OT. The Vader we know is 20 years older in the OT.

Furthermore, there is a big difference between not getting a saber spoon and learning that the person you sacrificed your life for has died. Most people would start instantly crying if they learned a loved one had died. Would you have prefered Vader to start bawling?

Hamill can act? I'll say he is good at acting like a whiny, pathetic child, but that is it. If Mark Hamill was such a good actor, then why did his acting career seemingly cease after Star Wars?

Yes, Irvin Kershner can direct. But Lucas also did a good job of directing ANH and ROTS. Every director has had their bad movies, as Lucas did with TPM and AOTC (although I think TPM was okay).

Seems to me Vader's "Noooo!" came out of desperation and defiance to Palpatine's revelation as well, which he already then suspects to be true.
