"...when you were old enough." Ben Kenobi before he gets the lightsaber out and shows Luke it for the first time. I actually didn't catch that when watching the OT before, it kind of just hit me now.

Hmmm. I'm not sure how to explain that one. Maybe it's old Ben talking hypothetically again? smile.gif

I am just waiting to see some sorry gusher try to explain this one away. Obi-wan clearly indicates that Anakin wanted Luke to have the lightsaber, not that Anakin would have wanted Luke to have the lightsaber.

The fact that Obi Wan says Anakin wanted Luke to have the lightsaber is open to interpretation. The real Anakin, without a doubt, would want Luke to have the lightsaber so that Luke can "save" him.

What's important is that Obi Wan actually DOES get ahold of Anakin's lightsaber so at least Lucas was thinking about it.

wow.. that's pretty neat actually.
I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

Well, what was the alternative? "Your father was an evil sod, and just after I cut both his legs off and left him to slowly burn to death, I picked this up for you?"

It's just a throwaway comment tied up with Obi-Wan's attempt to con Luke into thinking his father was good and is dead. Let's not over-analyse here geek.gif

If it was really was all planned out ahead of time, then Obi would have said nothing at all, or at least as Twig said "would have wanted you to have this." It's just one more of many inconsistencies that grate on the nerves and indicate poor planning.

I suppose it could have been fixed by maybe Anakin commenting to Ben that he hopes his child one day become a Jedi - I'm not sure if he makes any comments like this in Ep III.

I was really hoping that some allusion would be made to that. I was hoping that Kenobi's dispatching of Anakin would be more uncertain, i.e., he falls over the side of a cliff and Obi-Wan tries to look down but all he sees is smoke, but no Anakin. So, he assumes he fell into the lava and leaves, but sad. He sees the saber and picks it up. In Episode III it seems so callous.

The prequels only make sense in light of the OT only if Kenobi and Yoda were conning Luke all along, in fact it was the Jedi who were evil and had to be eliminated and the fact the empire came along was good for the galaxy. Then in the thankfully unfilmed sequels, Luke starts to realize this and becomes the new Emperor, as Papatine had forseen.

Someday when I have more time maybe I'll write up an extended entry on this.

Yes, and this is why I hate the prequels (and ROTJ to a lesser extent) because they have completely destroyed two good characters.

At the point when Obi Wan gives Luke the sabre, he is lying to him about Anakin, and so he lies to him about the light sabre. I think Obi Wan wants Luke to take the light sabre in actuality. He just makes up the part about Anakin to make Luke accepti it as his duty.

the prequels make yoda and obi-wan deceitful - and worse yet, incompetant.

But they were decietful towards Luke in the origional trilogy too. You don't think that lying about his father is decietful?

Yes, and of course, this all takes place in ROTJ---The beginning of the fall of Star Wars. Lucas decided to take short-cuts and cop-outs and utterly destroyed something that could've been great---yes, we may get into another "I Hate ROTJ" argument---because Vader could've just been messing with Luke, he didn't HAVE TO BE ANAKIN!

When Obi-Wan said, "From a certain point of view!" I just wanted to scream and throw something at the screen! Of course, I have manners.

If you look through that article with the Gary Kurtz interview, which was taken back in the early 80's, and he mentions the "prequels" which involve (get this) "Anakin and his relationship with his friend, Darth Vader"---imagine what could've been! Imagine that Obi-Wan was not delusional, incompetent, hypocritical, or a pathological liar. Imagine it.

As you can tell, I was terribly disappointed with ROTJ when it came out. We all should've seen then that something was wrong and would continue to get worse.
